TAKUYA: Digimon Frontier Blu-Ray Box Special Drama CD, “The Train Known as Hope.”

ANNOUNCER: The train will be jolting, so please be careful and hold on.

HIM: Are you awake? You were in a pretty deep sleep. Eh? Meguro? Meguro is already way behind us. Did you miss your stop? You must have been extremely tired. You have a busy schedule, huh? I hope you can relax now that it’s the end of the day.

TAKUYA:　Hey, Tomoki.
TOMOKI:　What is it, Takuya-san?
TAKUYA:　Did you grow taller again? How tall are you now?
TOMOKI:　Um, 180 centimeters.
TAKUYA:　Man! Just the other day, you were only taller than me by a little bit, but you’ve sure shot up now.

HIM:　Those boys in front of us hanging by the train straps. They look like they’re in high school. I wonder what they’re chatting about. Let’s have a listen.

TOMOKI:　I’m sorry.
TAKUYA:　It’s nothing to apologize about. By the way, what did you want to ask my advice on?
TOMOKI:　To tell you the truth… I’m wondering if I should run for student council president.
TAKUYA:　Whoa, that’s amazing, Tomoki!
TOMOKI:　But there is one problem.
TAKUYA:　What’s that?
TOMOKI:　I’m a freshman.
TAKUYA:　Well, duh, I know that already! I’m a third-year.
TOMOKI:　The student council president is usually a second-year.
TAKUYA:　Uh, so is there a school rule or something that says you can’t run for student council president as a first-year?
TOMOKI:　No, there isn’t, but… The thing is, no one has ever done it before.
TAKUYA:　C’mon, no one’s gonna have a problem with it! If they do, I’ll punch their lights out!
TOMOKI:　Takuya-san… Please, anything but that…
TAKUYA:　And Tomoki, I’m surprised at you! Why would you worry about a small thing like that? Doing what no one else has done is the frontier spirit, isn’t it? …Probably.
TOMOKI:　You’re right. Okay then. I’ll apply for the running.
TAKUYA:　Good! Now that that’s done, time for a strategy meeting. First, what are you gonna say as your catchphrase or slogan?
TOMOKI:　I’ve already come up with a slogan.
TAKUYA:　You sure you weren’t planning on running from the start?
TOMOKI:　No, that’s not it. I was thinking about it so I could have it ready for next year.
TAKUYA:　Oh, I see. So, what’s your slogan?
TOMOKI:　”Bullying and mean behavior is unforgivable!”
TAKUYA:　Hey, that’s Chakmon’s signature phrase!
TOMOKI:　Yes. There have been cases of bullying at my school, and as I was thinking on how I’d like to do something about it, I heard those words enter my ears.
TAKUYA:　Maybe it was the voice of Chakmon’s ice spirit.
TOMOKI:　Yeah, maybe. When I told Katsuharu and Teppei about it, they said they’d be glad to help me out.
TAKUYA:　Katsuharu and Teppei… Those are the two guys who were with Angemon in the Digital World, aren’t they? The ones who pushed you into the Trailmon.
TOMOKI:　That’s right.
TAKUYA:　And now you guys are friends, huh?
TOMOKI:　I know that getting rid of bullying isn’t easy. But if my generation can’t do it, then as long as it’s inherited by the next generation and the generation after that, then I’m sure that one day, bullying will be eradicated. I want to keep working on it with that belief in mind. That’s my campaign pledge.
TAKUYA:　Haha! Come to think of it, I remember how you used to say that you wanted to become a hero of justice. How about becoming a politician?
TOMOKI:　I haven’t thought that far ahead yet… But never mind that. Takuya-san, you’ll be continuing soccer even after you graduate, right?
TAKUYA:　Yep!
TOMOKI:　I heard from Izumi-san that you’re going to Italy! Is it Serie A?[1]
TAKUYA:　Nope, Serie D. Going from top to bottom, it’s A, B, C, and D. D is the fourth-ranked league.
TOMOKI:　That’s amazing!
TAKUYA:　Yep! But I’m not staying satisfied. From there, I’ll keep building up experience, training my physique, improving my technique, and make it to the top league one day!
TOMOKI:　You could do it, Takuya-san. You could definitely do it!
TAKUYA:　To tell you the truth, I have someone that I admire! Maybe you’ve heard of him? It’s Sukehiro Tomita[2], who graduated from Urawa High School and scored tons of goals in Serie A! I wanna be a soccer player like Tomita one day!
TOMOKI:　Haha. By the way, were you able to master the Italian language? You’ll need to know how to communicate.
TAKUYA:　Uh… well… Not really… In fact… Not at all?
TOMOKI:　Is Izumi-san not teaching you well?
TAKUYA:　It’s not that, she just won’t shut up! She keeps going on at me about “forza, forza”! Ah, “forza” means “do your best”. I don’t need to be told to do my best, I’m already doing it! But there are some things in this world that are impossible no matter how hard you try!
TOMOKI:　What are you saying, Takuya-san?! How could you just call it quits from the start?!
TAKUYA:　U–Uh… Tomoki…
TOMOKI:　Ah… I’m sorry. That sounded bossy.
TAKUYA:　No, it’s fine. You’re right. If I don’t speak the language, they won’t use me in matches. I’ll just have to do it.
TOMOKI:　That’s right! I’ll do my best, so you should do your best too, Takuya-san!

ANNOUNCER:　We are arriving at Azabu-Juuban. The exit will be on the right. [in English] Arriving at Azabu-Juuban.

TAKUYA:　Come to think of it, we kept losing to the Royal Knights and Lucemon in the Digital World so much that we all got fed up with it… But we still kept trying.
TOMOKI:　That’s right. Once you give up, it’s all over.
TAKUYA:　Compared to that, Izumi’s nag attack is no threat!

HIM:　Did you hear that? They just said “Digital World.” Do you want to know what that is? Then let’s switch trains here.

–

ANNOUNCER:　The train from Roppongi to Tochou-mae to Hikarigaoka will be arriving on the second track. Please stand clear of the doors. Please watch the gap between the train and the platform.

JUNPEI:　[singing Italian opera]
IZUMI:　H–Hey… No…
JUNPEI: What? [keeps singing]
IZUMI:　Just… Junpei!
JUNPEI:　[whispers] Is it just a bit too low? [keeps singing, louder]
IZUMI:　Don’t sing inside the train!
JUNPEI:　[keeps singing]
IZUMI:　Ahh… You’re bothering the other passengers!
JUNPEI:　Eh? Oh, c’mon… You were the one who told me to sing, Izumi-chan.
IZUMI:　[hissing] What are you going to do about this? Everyone’s looking at us!
GIRL #1:　[giggling] Who’s that guy? An opera singer? He’s pretty stout, so he looks the part.
GIRL #2:　Never mind that, do you see that girl next to him? It’s her, isn’t it? That reader model[3] we often see in magazines… Um, what was her name… Oh, right! Izumi Orimoto!
GIRL #1:　Oh my god! I gotta take a photo!

HIM:　Oh? Are you also interested in that reader model and that man who looks like an opera singer? You have good instincts! Let’s listen to what they’re talking about!

IZUMI:　[sighs] In any case, after hearing that song, I can’t believe you were able to get into H.U.[4]
JUNPEI: I’d sing more properly if I wasn’t inside a train.
IZUMI:　But still, I was surprised that watching Shizuka Arakawa in the Turin Olympics was what made you decide to become an opera singer[5]. Junpei, you’re surprisingly quite the fanboy.
JUNPEI:　I never said that. I’m training to be an opera singer so that I can have an even closer relationship with Izumi-chan…
IZUMI:　What are you muttering about? If you have something to say, then say it clearly.
JUNPEI:　[loudly] All right! I will! …Izumi-chan, have you decided what to do once you graduate high school?
IZUMI:　I’ll be more or less going to university?
JUNPEI:　Where?
IZUMI:　I haven’t decided that yet.
JUNPEI:　Then why don’t you come to my school?
IZUMI:　H.U. is a bit… Um… Well, for starters, I plan on applying to 4-5 schools that look interesting, then go to whichever among them accepts me based on how I feel at the time.
JUNPEI:　That’s rather leaving it up to the wind, isn’t it? As expected of the former Fairymon.
IZUMI:　Fairymon! What a nostalgic name! Oh, speaking of which, when I was Fairymon in the Digital World…
JUNPEI:　Yeah?
IZUMI:　I could see the different types of wind as colors. Zephyrs were celeste… Sky blue. Tailwinds were arancione… Orange. Headwinds were nero… Black. It wasn’t just colors. I could even hear their tune and smell the scent of the winds… Winds have a lot of different appearances to them.
JUNPEI:　Ooh, I see.
IZUMI:　Even now when I’m feeling the wind, I can kind of tell the sensation of that wind… Maybe Fairymon’s wind spirit is still within me. How about you, Junpei? Do you still remember the sensations from when you were Blitzmon?
JUNPEI:　I… I’m not sure. I don’t remember much about it. In fact, back then I was at my wits’ end all the time, so I never got the chance to sit back and taste what lightning was like.
IZUMI:　What about now?
JUNPEI:　What do you mean “now”? Are you telling me to get electrocuted? I can’t do that, I’ll die!
IZUMI:　[laughs] I see! Lightning is rather troublesome, huh?
JUNPEI:　Heh, yes it is.

HIM:　Those two are talking about the Digital World too. Aren’t you getting more curious?

JUNPEI:　I–Izumi-chan… By the way…
IZUMI:　What?
JUNPEI:　I’ve got something to ask you, as a suggestion. Um… When you’ve been accepted into Uni, Izumi-chan, I have an idea on how to celebrate…
IZUMI:　Wow! Grazie!　Thanks!　What are you planning to give me?
JUNPEI:　It’s not a thing. Um… What do you think about traveling? We can take a trip to Italy and see the Roman Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Blue Grotto in Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and then lastly, we can enjoy opera in Milano’s La Scala!
IZUMI:　Va bene! That’s a great idea! I approve!
JUNPEI:　Yes! I got Izumi-chan’s approval! Khhh, it was worth it to bring out my courage and make a confession!
IZUMI:　If we’re going, then the best time would be during summer vacation when university life has quieted down. Takuya should already be in Italy by then, and Kouji might be able to join us there. Which means the people leaving from here would be me, Junpei, Kouichi, Tomoki, and…
JUNPEI:　U–Um… Izumi-chan? You aren’t thinking of taking everyone along, are you?
IZUMI:　Of course!
JUNPEI:　N–No way! Also, what’s this about Takuya being in Italy? What’s that all about?
IZUMI:　Eh? Junpei, haven’t you heard? Takuya’s joining a soccer team there.
JUNPEI:　No one told me that!
IZUMI:　I see… Oh! I know!
JUNPEI:　What? What?
IZUMI:　Summer vacation and the opening games for the league will happen at the same time, won’t they? Then why don’t we all go to cheer for Takuya?
JUNPEI:　Ehh?!
IZUMI:　Listen. In Italian, “go” means “vai”! Vai! Takuya, vai! Goal! Goal!
JUNPEI:　I–Izumi-chan… You need to keep your voice down in the train…
ANNOUNCER:　Aoyama-Itchome. Aoyama-Itchome.

HIM:　Sounds like they’ve gone off-topic from the Digital World. Let’s get off here and switch trains again.

–

HIM:　Look. There are two boys there. They look similar, don’t they? They’re twins. I’m sure that those two will talk about the Digital World too. Let’s give them a listen.

KOUJI:　You got an A-grade for medical school? That’s amazing, Kouichi! You’re as good as accepted.
KOUICHI:　No, I can’t let my guard down just yet. A mock exam is still a mock exam. Besides, it’s you who is the amazing one, Kouji.
KOUJI:　Huh? What’s so amazing about me?
KOUICHI:　You’re gonna travel around the world! That’s incredible! The scale of that is so huge, I can’t even begin to imagine it.
KOUJI:　Don’t think of it as that big of a deal. If I said it’s more like being a “backpacker,” would you know what that is?
KOUICHI:　Yeah, I can understand “backpacker.”
KOUJI:　I’ll be bringing my smartphone with me, so I’ll send you photos of where I go.
KOUICHI:　Thanks, I’ll be looking forward to it. But even if we’re connected through the internet, it’s kind of sad that we won’t get to see each other for some time.
KOUJI:　… [humming]
KOUICHI:　…What?
KOUJI:　Hey, Kouichi? When you feel sad, just look up.
KOUICHI:　What happens when I look up?
KOUJI:　The sky is connected endlessly. Whenever you’re looking up at the sky, I’m probably looking up too. When you think of it that way, you won’t feel lonely anymore.
KOUICHI:　[smiles] Okay. I’ll do that.
KOUJI:　Oh, but… There is one thing bothering me.
KOUICHI:　What is it?
KOUJI:　Mm…
KOUICHI:　You can tell me anything. If it’s something that I can help with, then I want to help in any way I can.
KOUJI:　Thanks. To tell you the truth, it’s about Mom. She’s a worrywart, so I think she might get herself worked up if I don’t come back home for one or two years.
KOUICHI:　Yeah, that’s a legitimate worry.
KOUJI:　I want to do what I can to make her feel at ease. I know, Kouichi! Why don’t you pretend to be me and go see her once in awhile?
KOUICHI:　Eh? T–That’s…
KOUJI:　Do you not like that idea?
KOUICHI:　No, I’m not against it… I just don’t know if I can pull it off or not…
KOUJI:　Sure you can! Compared to getting into med school, this should be a piece of cake.
KOUICHI:　I don’t know if studying and impersonating someone should be compared at the same level…
KOUJI:　Let’s give it a shot and practice.
KOUICHI:　O–Okay…
KOUJI:　Mom, I’m home! Now you.
KOUICHI:　M–Mom, I’m home.
KOUJI: That’s stiff. Can you say it a bit more cheerfully? Mom, I’m home!
KOUICHI:　Mom, I’m home…　Like that?
KOUJI:　Yeah, like that. But make your voice just slightly louder. Mom, I’m home!
KOUICHI:　Mom, I’m home!
KOUJI:　That’s it! That was perfect!
KOUICHI:　T–Thank goodness…
KOUJI:　The only problem left would be Garm…
KOUICHI:　Garm? What’s that? The Garm in Garmmon?
KOUJI:　Yeah. Garm is the name of my dog. He has a sharp nose, so I dunno if he’ll be fooled easily… He might bark or try to bite you if he knows that you’re not me…
KOUICHI:　…Sorry… I can’t do it after all.
KOUJI:　Ah… N–No, I’m sorry! I took advantage of your kindness and was being pushy…
KOUICHI:　…
KOUJI:　…
KOUICHI:　(*Sigh*… If only I had a little more courage… If only some of Duskmon’s strength still remained in me…)
KOUJI:　(I made Kouichi feel depressed… If I was Wolfmon, I could have brought him light…)

HIM:　What’s the matter? Why are you so surprised? Eh? There’s something behind the twins? …Yeah, there is. Digimon! Those are Digimon you’re seeing! Digimon come as various types, but those two look bigger and stronger than the humans.

WOLFMON:　Hey, Duskmon. Did you hear what Kouichi just said?
LOWEMON:　C’mon, Wolfmon, don’t call me by my old name. I’m Lowemon now.
WOLFMON:　Oh, that’s right. Lowemon.
LOWEMON:　Kouichi is wrong. Duskmon was strong because he was ignorant. He was strong because the only thing that he knew was to fight. All he ever thought about was defeating his opponents.
WOLFMON：　But the truly strong are the compassionate souls. A merciful heart is necessary.
LOWEMON:　It’s Kouichi who is stronger. I know because I’ve been by Kouichi’s side all the time, watching him. I’ve seen how hard Kouichi has been studying to get into med school.
WOLFMON:　I’ll bet he has.
LOWEMON:　It’s not just studying. He’s also been keeping up his part-time job delivering newspapers because he thought that a scholarship alone wasn’t going to be enough. Kouichi is an amazing person. As the Digimon who accompanied him as the Spirit of Darkness, I am very proud of him.
WOLFMON:　Kouji is the same way. He humbles himself, always saying that he still has much to work on, but an uncut gem doesn’t sparkle. By traveling the world, Kouji’s light is sure to shine even brighter. I look forward to that day.

HIM:　The Digimon are saying some nice stuff. Digimon and humans, by journeying together, help each other to grow.

ANNOUNCER:　This train will be going direct on the Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line running semi-express to Chūō-Rinkan. The next stop is Shibuya. Shibuya. After Shibuya, we will be stopping at Ikejiri-Ōhashi. For transfers, please take the Fukutoshin Line, the JR Line, the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line, or the Keio Inokashira Line. Please remember to take all of your belongings when exiting the train. Thank you for riding the Tokyo Metro Hanzōmon line.

LOWEMON:　Kouichi and his brother are getting off at a later stop, right? Wolfmon.
WOLFMON:　Futako-Tamagawa. But we’ll be getting off here.
LOWEMON:　I know that.

HIM:　Why are you staring into space? You’re getting off too! Follow those Digimon!

–

HIM:　Let’s get on that elevator.

[The sound of an elevator going down]

HIM:　This is your first time in this elevator, right? Where is it headed? To the terminal underground. From there, you will be going to the Digital World. It’s the frontier of the Digimon that you saw earlier. You were able to see the Digimon, right? It’s actually my job to guide people like you to the Digital World. Ah, I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Neemon, a Digimon. Nice to meet you.

–

PUMPMON:　Yay, welcome to Shibuya!
GOTSUMON:　The railway train going straight to the Digital World is gonna be departing soon!
WOLFMON:　Who are you guys?
PUMPMON:　I’m Pumpmon!
GOTSUMON:　I’m Gotsumon!
LOWEMON:　You’re in the wrong series!
PUMPMON:　Oh, don’t be such stiffs!
GOTSUMON:　Did you know? Just the other day, one of the staff members was waiting for the pedestrian light at Shibuya, and a young person who was a complete stranger apparently said this!
PUMPMON/GOTSUMON:　”You can’t have Shibuya without Pump and Gotsu!”
PUMPMON:　That makes me so happy! Thank you!
CHAKMON:　[running up] Hey, wait for me!
PUMPMON:　Here’s Chakkamon[6] who will inspect our tickets!
CHAKMON:　Ahh, it’s so cold! I brought hotpot! I’m gonna light it up now! Click. Click. Huh? I’m out of gas! —Hey, I’m not Chakkamon!
PUMPMON:　Oh, my apologies! Checkmon!
CHAKMON:　Let’s see here, I’m going to check the quality of this merchandise… Oh, it’s good… And the packaging? Not bad… The time of delivery is— I’m not Checkmon either!
PUMPMON:　I know that! Chutneymon!
CHAKMON:　Just as I thought, you can’t have curry without chutney!
FAIRYMON:　…How long are you going to keep doing this, Chakmon?
CHAKMON:　Oh, hello!
GOTSUMON:　Well, well, if it isn’t Lady Fairymon!
FAIRYMON:　Is there no women-only car here?[7]
GOTSUMON:　Not at this time, unfortunately.
BLITZMON:　It’s okay, Fairymon. I, Blitzmon, will risk my very life to protect you.
PUMPMON:　Whoa, a human power generator! Nice! Like a Digimon stun gun!
BLITZMON:　Oh souls warped by evil desires! My lightning will purify thee!
[Lightning falls and something blows up]
PUMPMON:　Hey, there’s someone within the smoke!
AGNIMON:　[theatrically] Agnimon has arrived!
PUMPMON:　Is he in a period piece?[8]
AGNIMON:　Quiet all ye! Oh souls corrupted by evil! Do thou not see this family crest of flames?!
PUMPMON:　But why a period piece?
AGNIMON:　If thou dost not know, then listen sharp! I call myself Agnimon, but my old name was different! I was born in Izumo and was originally a miko! I became a performer and put on shows as I journey! My kabuki dancing is world-famous! [in a girlish voice] If you’ve heard of Okunimon, that’s me!
CHAKMON:　Go go, fire lady!
NEEMON:　Allow me to explain! Okunimon is a female performer who is considered to be the originator of kabuki theater. She is a Digimon modeled after Izumo no Okuni.[9]
AGNIMON:　My recompense be like a fiery chariot[10]. Pray, would you put a pretty coin in my purse?
FAIRYMON:　[applauding] Wow…
BLITZMON:　What an impressive show!
PUMPMON/GOTSUMON:　Oh man, they’re going along with it!
LOWEMON:　Hm? Wolfmon… What’s the matter? You look like you’re struggling with something.
WOLFMON:　…Hey… Can I make a pervy joke?
ALL:　NO!

[The Trailmon departs]

NEEMON:　Now… At last, it’s time to set off for the Digital World! What sort of world do you think it is? This is so exciting!

GOTSUMON:　Ahh! Oh crap!
PUMPMON:　[banging on the doors] Let us out!
FAIRYMON:　They were so wrapped up in fooling around that they forgot to get off…
BLITZMON:　What a pair of clumsy bunglers.
PUMPMON:　Damn it! If I can’t leave, then I’m gonna make a mess in here! Trick Or Treat!
GOTSUMON:　Angry Rock!
CHAKMON:　Ah… They hit Lowemon.
LOWEMON:　You guys… Mind if I beat you up?[11]
PUMPMON/GOTSUMON:　E–Eeehhhh?!
LOWEMON:　I can’t hear your answer zansu![12]
WOLFMON:　That sounded like a mix of stuff there…

[LOWEMON attacks, breaking a window]

PUMPMON/GOTSUMON:　Ahhh! We’re being sucked outside!
PUMPMON:　Well, everyone, goodbye!
GOTSUMON:　We’ll be going back to Shibuya!
DUSKMON:　Those guys weren’t enough. Is there anyone else here who’s worth defeating?
AGNIMON:　Oh crap. Lowemon’s degenerated into Duskmon! Let’s all put a stop to him! Fire Darts!
WOLFMON:　Licht Sieger!
FAIRYMON:　Brezzo Petalo!
BLITZMON:　Thor Hammer!
CHAKMON:　Icicle Lala!
DUSKMON:　Geist Abend!

[Their attacks fly around everywhere]

WOLFMON:　Hey, guys… I know there’s stuff going on right now, but am I really not allowed to make a pervy joke?
ALL:　NO!

NEEMON:　Look at that. We’re getting further and further away from Shibuya. Now look ahead. That’s the Digital World. The future where you’re meant to go. The frontier of hopes and dreams!

[1] Serie A = One of the best professional football leagues in the world. Serie A through C are professional leagues, while Serie D is a non-professional league. [Link to Wikipedia]
[2] Sukehiro Tomita = Although not an actual soccer player, this man was the screenplay writer for the Digimon Frontier TV series. He did in fact graduate from Urawa High School in Saitama.
[3] Reader model = A “normal, everyday” person who is a model for fashion magazines meant to target the average person. [Link to Wikipedia]
[4] H.U. = Izumi uses the term “HonDai” which is a shortened term for “Hon*** Daigaku” (本大 or Hon*** University). Since, however, no actual “HonDai” exists, I translated it to H.U.
[5] Shizuka Arakawa in the Turin Olympics = This is a reference to Arakawa’s free-skate program during the Turin Olympics in 2006. The song used was “Turandot,” an opera by Giacomo Puccini. [Link to a video of Arakawa’s free-skate program on Youtube]
[6] Chakkamon = “Chakka” (着火) meaning “to ignite”.
[7] Women-only car = Some of Japan’s trains have cars that are designated for women only, in order to decrease cases of sexual harrassment in trains. [Link to Wikipedia]
[8] A period piece = Agnimon’s tone of voice indicates that he is acting in a “jidaigeki,” a period drama set in the Edo period to depict the livelihoods of samurai and people back in the day. [Link to Wikipedia]
[9] Izumo no Okuni = A reference to a real miko who became the originator of kabuki theater. [Link to Wikipedia]
[10] “Like a fiery chariot” = A saying that means your financial situation is tight and you’re in the red. It’s likely that Agnimon here is asking for money for his performance. I translated it literally to keep the “flame” reference for Agnimon.
[11] “You guys… Mind if I beat you up?” = The beginning of the catchphrase said by Ryutaros, a character from Kamen Rider Den-O. He is voiced by the same voice actor, Kenichi Suzumura.
[12] “I can’t hear your answer zansu!” = The second part of Ryutaros’ catchphrase, ending in Iyami’s “zansu” (a character from Osomatsu-san), who is also voiced by Kenichi Suzumura.

Takuya Kanbara : Junko Takeuchi
Kouji Minamoto : Hiroshi Kamiya

——————————–

[Sounds of a band tuning, while TAKUYA and KOUJI clear and test their voices. Then TAKUYA speaks]

TAKUYA: EVERYONE!!
TAKUYA & KOUJI: [coolly] Peace!
BAND MEMBERS: [with scattered unenthusiasm] Peace.
TAKUYA: You folks may have made a lot of Digimon songs up ’til now—
KOUJI: Hey, Takuya.
TAKUYA: I mean, up until now.[1]
KOUJI: Uh… so we’ve called y’all in here for one reason and one reason alone!
TAKUYA: Hey!
KOUJI: Oh. I mean, you all.
TAKUYA: We’ve got a new series in the making! Yes! In light of the upcoming start to Digimon Frontier Zero Two, we’ve gathered you all here today so we can get recordin’ its opening theme, I mean, so we can record!

[Silence]

KOUJI: S—So, there you have it! In order to make an opening song that’s better than its predecessors…
TAKUYA & KOUJI: It’s been decided that the two of us will rock it instead! — er, that is, will be singing it.
BAND MEMBER: Huh? It’s not W*da?[2]

[TAKUYA and KOUJI look on as people murmer amongst themselves]

TAKUYA: [whispers] Hey, Kouji. Everyone looks surprised by the news.
KOUJI: Yeah, you’re right. Feels kind of good, doesn’t it? A nice plunge into our second season.

[TAKUYA and KOUJI laugh evilly and then trail off into coughing]

TAKUYA: [importantly] Is the songwriter Hiroshi Yamada around? Yamada-kun?[3]
YAMADA: Ah, here, here I am.
KOUJI: Have you finished the lyrics? Hm?
YAMADA: Y–Yes, uh… they’re right here.
TAKUYA: Oh, this, huh? Let’s see… [looks] Kouji, what do you think?
YAMADA: Yes, how is it?
KOUJI: The lyrics are okay, I guess, but, meh, the title…
TAKUYA: Yeah, it’s a little weak…
KOUJI: [dramatically] We want to make a song that’s better than the opening themes that came before it.
TAKUYA: That’s right! You’ve got to keep that in mind, you know. How many years have you been doing this job?
YAMADA: [breathes between his teeth] I’m sorry, I’ll fix the title.
TAKUYA: Hmph. We’re counting on you.
YAMADA: Yes, I’m sorry.
KOUJI: Now, let’s regain control of ourselves and start this thing!
TAKUYA: We’ll begin with the bass!

[Bass]

TAKUYA: Oh, nice!
KOUJI: You can’t have a Digimon song without this man—
TAKUYA & KOUJI: Michihiko Oota![4]
KOUJI: Apparently he’s moved into a bigger house recently.
TAKUYA: Must be rolling in dough!
TAKUYA & KOUJI: Of course he is.☆
KOUJI: Next is the entrance, Atsushi![5]

[Drums]

KOUJI: Heh, nice timing.
TAKUYA: By the way, Atsushi! How’s that cute girl you met in ******** doing these days?

[The drums abruptly stop as drumsticks clatter to the floor and Atsushi goes into a coughing fit]

TAKUYA: H–Hey, don’t let it bother you, man. I was just joking.
KOUJI: Heh. Youth.

[Drums start up again]

TAKUYA: Now, to take back the mood we just had… C’mon, keyboard!

[Keyboard]

KOUJI: What was heck was up with that glissando?! Wahoo! That was awesome!
TAKUYA: I knew we could rely on the popular band **** ******* to get what we want!
KOUJI: Must be getting tons of profit.
TAKUYA: For sure.
KOUJI: Next up, the guitar!

[Guitar]

TAKUYA & KOUJI: Wahoo!
TAKUYA: TOTALLY ROCKING, YEAH!
KOUJI: He’s been all fired up these days because of the new baby, I bet.
TAKUYA: Yeah, the kid looks just like his mother around the eyes, he’s really cute!
KOUJI: Yeah, good thing he doesn’t take after the daddy! Viva your wife’s D.N.A.!!!
TAKUYA: Give your thanks to God for big blessings!
YAMADA: Uh… hello?
KOUJI: To put it simply, we are great!
YAMADA: Hello, you two? Hello?
TAKUYA: To put it simply, we are number one!
YAMADA: Hey!
KOUJI: We’re awesome!
YAMADA: Hey!! Hello?!
TAKUYA: Now let’s get started!
KOUJI: Digimon Frontier Zero Two!
TAKUYA & KOUJI: OPENING START!

[The band stops]

TAKUYA & KOUJI: [annoyed] Huh?
YAMADA: I’ve come up with some titles.
TAKUYA: What did you do that for, things were just heating up!
YAMADA: [cringes]
KOUJI: There’s such a thing called “TPO,” you know. Time, Place, and Occasion!
YAMADA: I–I’m sorry.
TAKUYA: You’re hopeless, Yamada-kun. Anyway, show me.
YAMADA: Here it is.

SPECIAL INTERVIEW! with Ken’ichi Suzumura

The last interview among the cast is the master of darkness who appeared in the latter half of the series, Kouichi, as voiced by Suzumura-san.

[ About the big accident that occurred during his first evolution ]

Your first appearance in the show was as the evil Duskmon. How did you feel about that?

I got fired up about it. Back then, I rarely got the chance to play the bad guy, but I really love the dark hero[1] types. Also, he looked cool and he was super strong. He appears out of nowhere and beats up the main characters before leaving again. The other members of the cast told me “You got the best part,” and I really did think that I did. (laughs)

When Kouichi evolved to Löwemon for the first time, he was also pretty strong.

That episode was also very memorable to me. [2] Cherubimon tells him to come back to the dark side again, and then there’s a moment when you think that just maybe he will, but instead he says “I won’t lose to the darkness anymore” — that series of developments and the lines said in them were very good. As an aside, what happens afterward is the scene when Kouichi evolves to Löwemon for the first time, and that was when a serious accident happened. I went through a test before the actual performance, where I shouted “Spirit Evolution” for the first time. Just when I got to “Spirit Evo,” I cracked my back. Almost at once, I broke into a cold sweat (laughs). For the next five minutes I fought, but once I sat down, I couldn’t move anymore. Everyone who’d broken out laughing at first[3] started to look concerned, and someone from the staff borrowed a wheelchair to roll me out to the hospital (laughs). Since I couldn’t record it that day, Kouichi’s first Spirit Evolution was recorded when I was at the studio all by myself the following day (laughs).

Even when he went to the side of justice, the drama that involved Kouichi still had anxious developments.

Alongside the principal main story that focuses on Takeuchi-san’s Takuya, the twins’ story[4] of me and Kamiya is also being revealed all the while. What’s more, it turns into a sad story where Kouichi was possibly dead. Even I didn’t know whether Kouichi was alive or not until the last episode, so I acted it out while wondering to myself how this was going to end. Everyone around me would often say irresponsible things like, “Oh, he’s definitely dead” (laughs). That’s why I was relieved when I read the screenplay for the last episode. It was a truly wonderful story to the very end. I’m really sorry to say this, but I think it was these two brothers that were the best thing out of this series. Even Takeuchi-san said “Hmph, you guys are so popular” (laughs).

[ About his passion for Frontier ]

You came into the series mid-way, but were you able to fit into the atmosphere right away?

Even though I came in the series in the middle, I was taken under their wing quite easily so I looked forward to post-recording every week. After the recording session was over, all of us would always go out to eat together. This was an idea that we got excited about back then but Neemon would sometimes get caught up in something unbelievable and yet never die, right? So we’d get to talking that Neemon must actually be pretty friggin’ strong. We’d talk stupid about how he must definitely be hiding something huge in those red tights and how he’ll end up being the last boss. (laughs)

For a series that you enjoyed so much, how did you feel when it reached its last episode?

I was very sad about ending the series with these members. The story had full closure, so I knew that having a sequel would be impossible, and while I felt a sense of completeness, I thought that I’d like to keep continuing it a bit longer with these members. Also, it was a really intense year to me personally. It was a time when our generation mingled with our seniors and when I finally got a job. Put into expression, it was a transitional period for me where I was aiming for a higher plane, so it was a year where I used an approach every time that has now become my foundation. I’m sure that this comes out in the role so, even though I know it really isn’t the right thing to do, Kouichi was a character who took in everything about that from me.

In closing, please give a message to those who have bought the DVD Box.

I can say with confidence that it is a series that you will not regret watching. Those of you who bought it have made the right choice (laughs). Not only does it have a big flow like what you’d find in a Taiga drama, but each episode comes with a highlight scene, so it should have you feeling catharsis every time. Even if you just watch one, each episode is made up so that it can hold its own, so I’d like it if you rewatched through a variety of ways and kept finding more discoveries.

FOOTNOTES
N1) Dark hero — Suzumura-san is known to be a huge tokusatsu fan. The character that is especially his favorite is the lonely dark hero Hakaida, who appears in “Jinzou Ningen Kikaida”. Although a member of the evil organization that fights against the protagonist Kikaida, he doesn’t obey orders and often goes after Kikaida of his own accord while acting independently. This establishment is said to be the pioneer of all dark heroes. Suzumura-san apparently loves Duskmon because he was a character that brought Hakaida to mind.
N2) That episode was also very memorable to me — After Cherubimon erases Kouichi’s memories and makes him Duskmon, Kouichi evolves into the true warrior of Darkness Löwemon for the first time and drives off Cherubimon’s clone in episode 33 (“The New Warrior of Darkness! Löwemon & KaiserLeomon”). The insert song that plays during this episode’s A-part, “Oreta Tsubasa de ~With Broken Wings~ Kouichi’s Theme” is also Suzumura-san’s favorite song. “At the time I was recording it, I hadn’t even seen Kouichi’s face yet. But I sang it in pretty high spirits (laughs)”.
N3) Everyone who’d broken out laughing at first — This incident is apparently also a memorable one to the other cast members. When asking Takeuchi-san about her impression of Suzumura-san, the first thing she remembered was this episode and she said, “He couldn’t move at all. It looked like it hurt him pretty bad but it also made him look so pathetic that I couldn’t help laughing (laughs)”. Suzumura-san made a comeback for recording the next week. Since he did not suffer from any after-effects, even to this day Ryuuzaburou Ohtomo-san who voiced Cherubimon would ask him sometimes, “Is your back all right?”
N4) The twins’ story — Even in the year before “Frontier,” Suzumura-san and Kamiya-san acted in roles that faced off one another. Back then, they often had many opportunities to eat out together, and Suzumura-san talked about this strange episode that had occurred at one of those times. “My audition for Kouichi took place some time after the first cour was over. When I told Kamiya that I’d been chosen for Kouichi, he said, ‘I knew it.’ He didn’t know that I’d been trying for the role, but for some vague reason, he had the feeling that I would be Kouichi. That’s interesting, isn’t it?”

SPECIAL INTERVIEW! with Hiroshi Kamiya
A special interview that came with the “Digimon Frontier” DVD Box released on August 24, 2007.

Purchase of the DVD Box (Region 2 only) available at: Amazon.JP, CDJapan, YesAsia

Kamiya-san reminisces about the year of Frontier while performing as the cool Kouji.

[ About Kouji’s friends and his performance as Kouji ]

Could you tell us what led you to perform the role of Kouji and Wolfmon?

Voice of Kouji Minamoto, Wolfmon, Garmmon, Beowulfmon, and MagnaGarurumon.

When I first received the offer to audition. The role of the fifth grader was an unknown world to me and I thought it would be difficult, but after the audition was over, I thought strongly about how much I wanted this role. It’s part of the time slot that a lot of children watch their shows, and it’s also a story about a boy’s travels — naturally, I’d watched these types of shows when I was in elementary school, so I had a strong admiration for them. That’s why, when I found out that I got the role, I was so happy that I couldn’t help yelling out.[1]

Kouji has a very cool personality, but how was it like acting as him?

The year before “Frontier,” I was involved in “Chou GALS! Kotobuki Ran,” where I also played a cool role, but there were several times there when I fumbled my way around and thought “Was that okay?”… even though I shouldn’t be doing that really. That’s why I decided to throw an all-body pitch right from the first episode this time. I was pretty nervous about it at first. Playing the cool role is actually pretty embarrassing. Even if the role is cool, me, the person playing him, isn’t (laughs). But it was thanks to this series that I was able to open the drawer inside me to getting a grasp on the cool role. So I’m grateful.

He was a polar opposite to Takuya performed by Takeuchi-san.

[Takeuchi-san] was perfectly Takuya from the very first episode. She acted as Takuya real candidly, and it felt good watching her perform. Takuya and Kouji are good-hearted rivals at first who end up becoming friends who defeat the enemy, but when I saw Takuya in episode 1, I honestly wondered to myself if they really would end up in an equal relationship. Still, it was a very good choice to have Junko Takeuchi as Takuya. I could also say the same for the rest of the members, as it was a studio filled with talented people that made me think as such. That’s why I worked hard, because I wanted everyone else to think the same about me. Although, those feelings did have me spinning around aimlessly (laughs).

Suzumura-san who performed as the older twin brother Kouichi is actually also the same age as you are.

Suzu and I aren’t really about the junior/senior relationship, and rather than close friends, we were more like really good buddies. Oh, and that holds true even now (laughs). That’s why, with him as Kouichi, it felt very natural. Suzu also had a role in “Chou GALS! Kotobuki Ran” that sort of teamed up with mine, so when he was decided for the role of Kouichi, we talked about how this must be some kind of fate.

From Chiba prefecture.

[ His most memorable episode in Frontier ]

Was there a particular episode or character that left an impression on you?

What left the greatest impression on me was episode 7.[2] Kouji didn’t have many scenes at the beginning where he talked, but it was in this episode that Kouji and Takuya’s relationship came into strong focus. I was able to get a bit of a hold on his personality. There’s also the episode when Susanoomon evolves for the first time[3] that’s memorable to me. That was when Junko Takeuchi said to me, “Kamiya-kun, you do Susanoomon’s voice” — since she does most of the [pattern] voices, she said she was all burned out at that point (laughs). I understood how she felt, but since she’s the main character, we managed to convince her otherwise (laughs). As for character, it was the Royal Knights that appeared near the end. Kenta Miyake [as Dynasmon] is younger than me, but when he roars, it’s really scary. I fought with him while thinking to myself that there are people with scary voices like his. I didn’t believe I could win (laughs). There’s also a rare special attack[4] that Wolfmon uses only once. For those of you who’ve bought the DVD Box, try and look for it. (laughs)

In closing, what does “Frontier” mean to you, Kamiya-san?

After being a voice actor for more than 10 years, the year I was involved in “Frontier” was the best fun I’d ever had. I’d often go out to eat dinner with the whole cast, and as a series it was something that I felt was really worth doing. I did feel frustrated about how there were many things I couldn’t do, but I got an incredible amount of feedback. That’s why this series is my starting point. It’s very important to me, and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. If I ever have children, it’s a show that I would definitely want to show to them. I’d be happy if those who bought the DVD box treasured it always and watched it over and over too. The theme that’s portrayed in it is a normal one, so it should be one that you can enjoy at any age.

FOOTNOTES
N1) So happy that I couldn’t help yelling out — Despite it having happened five years ago, Kamiya-san still remembered this incident in detail. “I got a call from my manager while I was at an otolaryngologist nearby the office [that I’m affiliated with]. After I left the hospital and checked my cell, I found a ton of missed calls and voice messages. Then when I heard that I’d been chosen for Kouji, I remember screaming “YESSSS!” out loud. This happened nearby Gaiemmae station during the day, so it got a lot of salarymen staring at me. (laughs)”
N2) Episode 7 — When Takuya, Kouji, and Tomoki wind up wandering through Toy Town (“The Floating City! ToyAgumon’s Toy Country”). While Takuya treats the younger Tomoki nicely, Kouji insists that they shouldn’t give him special treatment just because of his age. However, when Tomoki is kidnapped, he doesn’t hesitate to go rescue him. It’s an episode that depicts both Kouji’s coolness and his awkward kindness, as well as when Takuya and Kouji, who’d been constantly arguing with each other until then, begin to communicate with each other for the first time to beat the enemy.
N3) The episode when Susanoomon evolves for the first time — Takuya and Kouji first evolve into Susanoomon in episode 48 (“Turn Light and Darkness into One! Kouichi’s Last Wish”). Takeuchi-san also mentioned during her interview, “Takuya worked hard for all the previous patterns and nothing else was coming out anymore, so I kept begging countless times for Kouji to voice Susanoomon (laughs). I also persistently kept telling Kamiya-kun too that since he’s a man he should do it (laughs).” However, with the director’s single voice of authority, Takeuchi-san was decided for Susanoomon’s voice.
N4) Rare special attack — Wolfmon’s attack, Strahl. When Kamiya-san received the script for it and read about its sudden appearance, even he was surprised. “It was written in it that Wolfmon shoots a beam from his eyes. I never saw anything like that before, so I went to post-recording thinking that it must be some mistake. And then he really did shoot a beam from his eyes, so that surprised me. (laughs) Later on, I learned that it was an attack that had been established officially beforehand, but in the actual series, it probably doesn’t come out unless he’s fighting something like a tengu.”

SPECIAL INTERVIEW! with Junko Takeuchi
A special interview that came with the “Digimon Frontier” DVD Box released on August 24, 2007.

Purchase of the DVD Box (Region 2 only) available at: Amazon.JP, CDJapan, YesAsia

Takeuchi-san spoke about her lively performance as the energetic protagonist Takuya.

[ Performing as Takuya Kanbara ]

Did you find anything difficult while acting out Takuya Kanbara?

Voice of Takuya Kanbara, Agnimon, Vritramon, Ardhamon, KaiserGreymon, and Susanoomon.

Takuya is the type of boy who says plainly what’s on his mind, so I acted while thinking that whatever was written [in the screenplay] was exactly what Takuya was feeling. It was actually when he evolved into a Digimon that it got difficult. Takuya is still an elementary schooler in the inside, but outside he looks like a Digimon and he even fights. I was worried over it at first. But — and this is just my interpretation of it — I think that Takuya is a very adaptable person. That’s why, even when he’s a Digimon, he immediately finds fun in it. He clearly won’t worry over it at all, so I realized halfway that I didn’t need to worry either. Also, the scenes involving special attacks and evolution I had to perform with a more and more powered up sense each time. It’s an important part, so even if it was the same technique or evolution form, it gave a different nuance each time[1], so I never got used to it.

How was the atmosphere like during post-recording?

It was pretty peaceful. I’d play-argue with Kouji’s actor, Kamiya-kun, much like how Takuya and Kouji do. (laughs) I really loved both the scenes where those two argued as well as talking to Kamiya-kun. Of course, talking to the others was fun too. My senior Ku-chan [Kumiko Watanabe-san] performed the youngest child Tomoki, which I found interesting. Even now when I perform female roles in other shows, she’d tease me by calling me “Oniichan” (laughs). My cat teacher[2], Kazuko Sugiyama-san (voice of Bokomon) and Masami Kikuchi-san (voice of Neemon) also took in a lot of their surroundings. Whenever I got too strung up and starting running around in circles, they’d create an atmosphere that took out the tension in me. I really felt an aura of warmth from those who’d performed the longest at the forefront.

If there was an episode or scene that left an impression on you, please tell us.

The first episode when Takuya immediately went to protect Tomoki even though they still didn’t know each other yet, I thought was interesting. It made me see that he really has the disposition of the older brother. Having to fight into B-part[3] of the last episode was also memorable. I was expecting to at least take it easy in the last episode (laughs).

In episode 16, the role of Gomamon that you performed in previous series appeared.

-PROFILE-
In the Digimon series “Adventure” and “02,” she performed as Gomamon. Her latest roles include “NARUTO -Shippuuden-” (as Naruto), “Yes! Precure 5” (as Rin Natsuki), etc. From Saitama prefecture.

I think it was a delicate decision made by the staff, but I’m very close friends with Kaida-san[4] who performed Gomamon for that episode. When I heard Gomamon was going to appear, I thought that I’d like to do it, but having someone I adore act as Gomamon made me very happy. I really looked forward to the recording for that day.

[ Looking back on the year of Frontier ]

What did the year spent as Takuya Kanbara mean to you?

The more I performed him, the more I saw the various things that I was lacking, so it was a year in which I received a lot of homework. That sounds vague when I put it into words, but it made me think that I had to make “Junko Takeuchi” a lot bigger. For instance, even if I acted as Takuya, if I’m a small, distrustful, and narrow-minded human being, that would make Takuya restricted. Even though the real Takuya is more big-hearted and free, he’d appear not to have those qualities because of me. To this day, I think about making myself a more open and deeper person, and in this way, “Frontier” was a series that gave me homework I’d never forget.

Please give a closing message to those who bought the DVD Box.

Members with very different personalities become the truest friends you could ever meet. That isn’t something you can see unless you watch the whole year’s worth, so I’d like you to enjoy yourself as you watch from beginning to end. Also, with the character variety, I think your sense of the show will change as you watch from each of their perspectives. For instance, Takuya’s point of view would be completely different from Kouji’s. I’m sure you’ll find it a lot of fun to rewatch again and again through different eyes.

FOOTNOTES
N1) Different nuance each time — Takeuchi-san performs many transformation/battle scenes in other shows, and revealed a personal stance in them. “For instance, when Takuya uses a new technique for the first time, he’d definitely be wondering to himself what its name is. Even if the words come naturally to him, he wouldn’t know what it means. But the more he uses it, the more he comes to understand. That’s why I felt that I had to be on the same level of emotion as him. If the same performance was good each time, then it could just be reused after all. (laughs)”
N2) Cat teacher — Takeuchi-san uploads pictures of her beloved cats almost every time in her personal blog, “Shin- Take no ko seikatsu,” and it was Kazuko Sugiyama-san (voice of Bokomon) who was the reason she started having them. The kitten she received from Sugiyama-san that she named “Denka-kun” [Your Highness] is the source of her happiness and “If Sugiyama-san hadn’t called to me back then, I never would’ve had cats as pets so I really am grateful.” To read a little more about Sugiyama-san’s other works, read note 8 in Tomita Sukehiro’s interview here. [link pending]
N3) B-part — In Japanese animation, it is mainstream for an episode to be divided into two parts, with the first half called A-part and the second half B-part. Digimon Frontier is also produced in this format. Just as Takeuchi-san said about “I remember fighting almost to the very end,” the last episode 50 (“Transcend Time! The Birth of a New Legend”) involved a fierce fight between Susanoomon and Lucemon that got even more intense as it went into B-part.
N4) Kaida-san — Yuki Kaida-san who performed Gomamon in episode 16 (“Just Being Strong Isn’t Enough! The Beautiful Warrior, Shutumon”). Her main roles were in such series as “HUNTER X HUNTER” (as Kurapica), “Tennis no Oujisama” (as Shuusuke Fuji), “Shounen Onmyouji” (as Masahiro Abeno), etc. Born in Tokyo. Besides the Gomamon performed by Kaida-san, there were the voices of numerous other Gomamon who appeared at the same time. Takeuchi-san’s voice is apparently included in their cries of “Goma~”

Translation of message inside this CD’s booklet:
This project began from a casual conversation.
It first took place at Bandai’s booth in “Jump Fiesta 2007,” which was held at the end of the year 2006 in Makuhari Messe. Bandai’s representative and I talked about how, because 2007 would make it 10 years since Digimon was first sold as a handheld game, we would at least like to set up some event for Summer 2007.
We figured that if we were going to do this, we should celebrate with something different from what we’ve already done before. I thought of a lot of things, but fell ill midway and had to semi-retire at the hospital for 50 days. After that, the representative for Bandai was changed, so the project was put to a temporary standstill.
But the “Digimon Chou Shinka Best!” CD that was re-released at the end of year 2006 became a big hit that sold over 20,000, and feeling that there must be something we could do to return the favor, the project idea was brought back into action.
At first, we considered forming a collaboration with an event, but it began to move in the direction of a CD collaboration that included the 5 main characters and the major artists from all 5 series. We’d never put all successive main characters onto one CD jacket before, and it was by sheer coincidence that our sale date was decided for August 1st, so we thought it may turn out to be the best present for the fans that we’ve yet created.
Everyone on the artist team was already skilled in making their own song and composition styles, so we received works that reflected their feelings for Digimon. Also, since the project was finally becoming a reality, I had a personal desire to hear those certain people sing new songs. With the tireless help of a large number of people, the project was able to take shape as you see here. Now I’d like to take this moment to give my deepest gratitude to everyone involved.
It will soon be 10 years since the anime first started as well.
It will make me happy if we can still do something precious for that time, in order to bring to mind once again the scenery we’d seen back then.
August 1st, 2007… I wonder if many people are gathering in Odaiba again for this year?
I hold anticipation that something will be born again from this memorial album…
And I pray that these “feelings” will reach the fans of Digimon all over the world…

The password is still, We Love DiGiMONMUSiC.

TRANSLATION
Take a deep breath Every day
This courage within our chests
Reset it all and Go!
Look pointedly ahead of you and stick out your chest
The preparations of our hearts are perfect
On the count of three, So Rendezvous

Ah~ I feel as if I understand now
Ah~ The things I should never let go…
Now reach it! You can still jump on now
As you face towards that wind…

We’ll walk as we look up at this infinite blue sky
It’s painting our future selves
The stars on the distant horizon are gazing at us
Because, well… our destinations have a smile for us
Oh yeah.. alright!

We’ve gotten closer to it Every day
This passion within our chests
Let’s take it all and go!
Look pointedly ahead of you and stick out your chest
The preparations of our hearts are
Pretty strong, Rendezvous

Ah~ I want to keep protecting
Ah~ The things I should never let go
Now run! We’ll feel it with our bodies
As we face towards that wind…

We’ll embrace our dreams as we look up at this infinite blue sky
It’s painting who we’ll be tomorrow
The stars on the distant horizon are guiding us
Because, well… our destinations have a smile for us
Oh yeah.. alright!

I’m sure the world is like
One strange and amazing et cetera
Oh yeah.. yeah!

We’ll walk as we look up at this infinite blue sky
It’s painting our future selves
The stars on the distant horizon are gazing at us
Because, well… our destinations have a smile for us
Oh yeah.. alright!

alright..

Track 8 in “Digimon 10th Anniversary -The Bridge To Dreams-” CD
Lyrics & Composition: ai (作詞・作曲:ai)
Arrangement: Takashi Morio (編曲:守尾 崇)

KANJI

TRANSLATION
I was still young with much to learn
Everything that reflected in my eyes looked brilliant

Not knowing how to be suspicious of others,
There were times I was hurt
But I’m sure that through them, I became stronger
Because I had you, I became stronger

No matter how hard I leap, I can’t outdo you
I wanted to reach past your height
So I tried jumping up over and over
Laughing gently at me, you stroked my head
With the magic of your palm
It was so warm that it put me at ease
Thank you
I love you

The miracle of the two of us coming upon each other
In this wide world is a symbol of happiness

Unable to protect others,
There were times I hurt you
But I can change more, for the better
Because you stay by my side, I want to evolve

I’m sure it must have been a small piece
Carrying a large bouquet of sparkling dreams in my arms
I dreamt a colorless dream

Repeating my loves and hates
I even climb over the walls of my heart
No matter how many times I may cry
The hope of moving forward to tomorrow
That I saw within your kind, smiling eyes
Made me so happy that it touched my heart
Thank you
Thank you
I love you

Thank you
I love you

Lyrics & Composition: Kouji Wada (作詞・作曲:和田光司)
Arrangement: Mitsuru Shimada (編曲:島田 充)

KANJI

TRANSLATION
We’ve walked a long way together
Before we’ve even realized it
No matter how discouraged we were at times,
We never felt like losing

As we made countless mistakes
And continued to feel lost
Everything resulted
In this 10 year miracle

We snuggled up to, collided with,
And encouraged each other
Building up a solid, unbreakable love…

As we proudly display it
For the entire world to see
Let’s meet here again after 10 more years

As we reflect in our hearts
The important things that cannot be seen
Our joy of having understood one another
Will become our strength for tomorrow

There’s no reason to hesitate anymore
Everyone is right beside you
The story of dreams will weave on forever

Oh stars and skies, Oh wind and clouds,
Light the paths we walk on
So that we may never be stopped

I want to tell the whole world
Everything about the proof of dreams
For linking hearts together and giving their support,
I thank everyone

I want to teach the whole world
The song of a wonderful love
Let’s continue to sing it so we can still hear it
No matter where we end up

Spread open your arms…
Towards a new future and an endless dream
And no matter how many years pass by
We will still be waiting for everyone

Reserving this page for the Digimon Animation memorial book that is supposedly meant to come out on February 23rd (February 25th for online stores). I plan to fill this page up with translated info from the book that I think is new or interesting, with scanned images of only specific parts of the book if I think a scan is necessary. Obviously I won’t be scanning the entire book.

– Yagami Taichi
=The active type who brims with courage=
A cheerful and positive 5th grade boy in Odaiba elementary school. He appears to move with reckless abandon, but he actually does take in his surroundings and he takes good care of his juniors in the soccer club. He can be a bit insensitive, but he acts as a reliable older brother figure to Koushiro and Takeru. If he doesn’t know/understand something, he acts while he tries to figure it out; ever since they come to File Island, this active characteristic of him is what makes him the one who pulls the rest of the children along. After he learns that the Digital World is made up of data, he begins to feel as if he is inside a video game and takes dangerous actions. But once realizing that, despite being data, he cannot start over like in reality if something were to happen to him, his desire to win over his fear and his mistakes leads him to learn what true courage is.
=Child/Vaccine/Reptile=
Taichi’s partner. With three sharp claws on each hand, his attitude of rushing to attack extremely strong enemies without fear comes from his partner. His appetite as well can be pretty ferocious. There are many times when he and Taichi both share their opinions to each other frankly, but due to his cheerful and honest personality, there are very little times when they end up fighting. His sense of justice is strong, and he is a reliable partner who evolves right away to protect Taichi when the situation looks grim. After his dark evolution to SkullGreymon, he feels at unease about evolution just like Taichi does, preventing him from even evolving into Greymon. However, after his training under Piccolomon, he learns the guts to challenge himself over and over again without fear of failure.
With his cool personality, he does not make attempts to hang out with anyone other than Takeru, but he is more considerate than anyone by keeping an eye on everyone’s conditions of fatigue and nerves. There are many times when he is the one who prevents Taichi from trying to tackle everything from the front. He can be pretty overprotective of Takeru, and considers it his job to protect Takeru because “he can’t do anything by himself.” During their fight with the Dark Masters, seeing Takeru’s growth causes him to lose footing on his identity, but through his clash with Taichi and his connection with Gabumon, he takes another look at himself and learns the meaning of true friendship: that there are times when you compensate for the weakness of others and vice-versa.
5th grader in Odaiba elementary school. She is a member of the soccer club just like Taichi. While a strong-willed girl who is powerful enough to play 2-top with Taichi as the team’s striker, she is also a sensible, level-headed person who is thoughtful about the smallest details. She takes good care of the younger children in the group, like Mimi, Takeru, and Hikari, and she is loved by them as a kind older sister. On the other hand, she also has a delicate side to her and often keeps her troubles to herself. Her mother once stopped her from participating in a soccer match, and Sora misunderstood her actions by thinking that her mother only cared about her being the successor of the family’s iemoto tradition. However, while she was trying to stop an injured Piyomon from joining a fight, she realized how her mother must have felt when she had stopped Sora.
—— Takenouchi Yoshiko
Sora’s mother, whose is the iemoto in the art of flower arranging. Because she expresses herself somewhat strictly, there are times when she is misunderstood. =A brainiac who loves to immerse himself in research=
4th grader in Odaiba elementary school. To Taichi and Sora, he is also their junior in the soccer club. Although normally a polite boy, once his curiosity gets a hold of him he pursues it without being considerate of those around him. He is good at computers, even bringing his laptop to camp, which in the end became useful in revealing the truth of the Digimon world. He learned by accident that he is an adopted child and was troubled over his relationship with his parents, who were thinking of keeping this quiet from him until he became an adult. When Vamdemon isolated Odaiba, his parents told him the truth themselves for the first time, and he once more felt bonded to them as his real parents, as they had raised him as their own son.
He shows understanding for the many strange aspects of Koushiro’s personality compared to those of children his own age, and has a huge capacity of accepting his idiosyncrasies.
—— Izumi Yoshie
Koushiro’s adopted mother. With her mother’s intuition, she had a feeling that perhaps Koushiro knew that he was adopted. She gives Koushiro the same love that she would of her own son, but wishes that he would act more like how a child should and show a bit more selfishness.

– Tachikawa Mimi
=A pure-hearted girl with a free spirit=
4th grader in Odaiba Elementary. She moves at her own pace and has a bit of a selfish side to her, but because of her honest and cheerful personality, she cannot be hated for this. For some reason, she is particularly well-liked by dirty types of Digimon, like Numemon and Sukamon. She is kind at heart, and after the Dark Masters appear she could no longer stand that a large number of Digimon were giving up their own lives to protect them and so decides to leave the group temporarily. However, upon accepting the death of Leomon, who had died protecting her from MetalEtemon, she decides to fight the Dark Masters so that he can once again be born in the Village of Beginnings. Starting with Ogremon, she leads a crowd of Digimon towards the top of Spiral Mountain.
He is so lovey-dovey with his wife Satoe that even Mimi can’t help but roll her eyes. His wife’s homemade cooking is a feast to his senses.
—— Tachikawa Satoe. Mimi’s mother. The food she makes is quite original in that she would make kimchi fried rice topped with whipped cream and strawberries. When it was time to escape from Big Sight, she complained not to make her husband have to do anything dangerous.

– Palmon
=A cute girl Digimon who loves fashion=
=Child/ Data/ Plant type=
Mimi’s Digimon. A plant-type Digimon, she can unleash many different kinds of smells from the flower on top of her head. She can also suck up nourishment from the ground and perform photosynthesis. Although a bit timid at certain times, she is mainly a kind, gentle Digimon who loves cute and fashionable things just like Mimi. Her feelings are easily in sympathy with Mimi’s, so whenever Mimi cries, she also cries, and whenever Mimi laughs, she also laughs. When Mimi was saddened by the sacrifices the Digimon made for them and left the group, she was prevented from fighting, but upon seeing Leomon fight hard to protect them, she begs Mimi to let her fight, too.
—— Poison Ivy
– Yuramon
=Baby/ NA / Seed type=
A baby whose body is covered with long fur that it looks like a fluff ball. It travels through the air in an airy fashion.
=Baby/ NA / Bulb type=
With two leaves coming out of her head, she can now perform photosynthesis. It is in this form that she meets Mimi on File Island for the first time.
– Togemon
=Adult/ Data / Plant type=
The evolved form of Palmon after being inspired by the Numemon’s desperate struggle against Monzaemon. Her personality as the fashion-loving Palmon hasn’t changed in the slightest, but now she displays a powerful boxing style. Her attack is unleashing the thorns on her body at the enemy, “Chiku Chiku Bang Bang.”
– Lilimon
=Perfect / Data / Fairy type=
The Perfect Level that is born out of the flower on top of Togemon’s head. When Vamdemon’s army attacks and drags Mimi’s family and the people of Odaiba into it, Mimi’s tears of being unable to forgive that lead the way towards her super-evolution. She has a form similar to that of a human girl, and the four wings on her back allow her to fly the skies freely. The “Flower Necklace” she can make appear from air can make bad viruses in a rampaging Digimon disappear.

– Kido Jyou
=Goes his own path in all seriousness=
6th grader in Odaiba elementary school. Since he planned on taking the entrance exam for a private middle school, he originally didn’t want to go to camp. A serious boy with a strong sense of responsibility, he worked hard as the oldest in the group to bring everyone back to their world safely, but because of his faintheartedness and lack of self-confidence he isn’t all that reliable. Because he is too honest, he often makes unnecessary remarks that discourage everyone. He aims to be a doctor because his dad tells him to, but his brother worries that it may not be the right career choice for Jyou since he faints at the sight of blood. But while caring for the injured Ogremon on Spiral Mountain, he awakens to the simple feeling that he wishes to help those in need before him.
He well understands Jyou and worries about him, for Jyou chooses to live a future that their father wants him to. Shin is thinking of working on an isolated island that has no doctor in the future.

– Takaishi Takeru
=A strong heart with an innocent smile=
2nd grader in Kawada elementary school. He is Yamato’s younger brother, but because of their parents’ divorce, he currently lives only with their mother. Because he is the youngest among the Chosen Children, he is treated with great care among the group and he himself has a very friendly and innocent personality. He can be somewhat of a crybaby, but he has shown times when he volunteered himself to stay up as guard for the night or acted as a diligent worker who wouldn’t allow others to favor him with kindness. Due to memories of his parents’ divorce, he hates seeing two people he loves fight each other. Although small, his sense of justice is very strong and there are some cases when this quality appears almost to the point of stubbornness. When Hikari, who is the same age as him, joins their group, he grows even tougher and gains a strong heart that refuses to give up under any circumstances.
=The 8th child bound by fate=
Taichi’s younger sister and a 2nd grader in Odaiba elementary school. Because she caught a summer cold, she is unable to go to camp and rests at home. When Taichi is blown back towards Tokyo along with Koromon after their fight with Etemon, she acts as if she had once met Koromon, confusing the two. The truth turns out to be that 4 years ago when Digimon appeared in the real world, she and Taichi encounter Koromon for the first time, but Hikari is the only one who remembers it clearly. She becomes known as the eighth Chosen Children before long, partnering with Tailmon, and joining the rest of the children to their adventures back in the Digital World. Because she had recently gotten over an illness, she gives off the impression that she is very sickly throughout the series, but she is actually a cheerful and bright girl. That strength of hers is shown when she would not give in to fear even in front of Vamdemon.
— Key Item
—— Whistle
If Taichi’s trademark is his goggles, then Hikari’s is her whistle. It worked as a sonar when they were underwater with Whamon.
The Yagami family’s cat. It ran around Odaiba trying to recover the Digivice it dropped. It is actually stronger than Koromon.
—— Yagami Yuuko
Taichi and Hikari’s mother. With her candid personality, she goes about doing the housework energetically for her family. When Greymon appeared to stop the Bakemon’s attacks, she was under the impression that it had attacked her children and was deeply worried.

=The fierce boy who inherits “Courage” and “Friendship”!!=
5th grader in Odaiba elementary schoo. 11 years old. He is a “Chosen Child” with the blue D-3. Rather than think first, he is the　reckless, hot-blooded type who acts with all of his power. He has a strong heart that refuses to ever give up, and he is very loyal to his friends. Daisuke was the first to accept Ken, who was once their enemy, into their group. In the movie, he also shows kindness when he sheds tears for Wallace whom he had only met recently. At school, he is in the same A-class with Takeru and Hikari. Due to his attraction for Hikari, he views Takeru as a tough rival. A soccer boy, he has a senpai-kouhai relationship with Taichi in the soccer club. His dream is to become the world’s best ramen shop owner.
Because she moved to Odaiba in 5th grade, the Digimon fight in the Internet that occurred in spring 2000 is her first encounter with the Digimon.
3rd grader in Odaiba elementary school. 9 years old. His D-3 color is yellow. His Digimentals are “Knowledge” and “Sincerity.” His Jogress partner is Takaishi Takeru. The youngest among the year 2003 members, he is quite mature for his age. He acts courteously and politely in a way that’s hard to believe coming from a 9 year old. His father who was a policeman died 3 years ago, so his grandfather Chikara raised him in his father’s place. While always self-composed and hard on himself, he is clumsy at expressing himself as a child. He also does not like lies. Because of his diligence and strong sense of responsibility, he is not all that flexible and was unable to forgive Ken for being the Digimon Kaiser for some time. Before long, he learns about the relationship between his father and Oikawa, the man who threatens the Digital World.
— Hida Chikara
Iori’s grandfather. He has a strict personality and is raising Iori with discipline in the place of his late son, Hiroki. However, unfitting of his age, he is good at being humorous and he likes cliched gags. His favorite food is the CHUx2 jelly. Long ago, back when Hiroki believed in the Digital World’s existence, he forbid Hiroki from being friends with Oikawa and felt secretly accountable for that afterwards. In episode 47, when the series draws to its close, Chikara explains everything when Iori reveals Armadimon to him.
— Picture of father
Iori’s father, Hida Hiroki was a first-rate policeman. However, 3 years ago, while undertaking the protection of an important person in London, he is killed in the line of duty. Even now, Iori looks up to him the most.

The boy who moves in Spring 2002 from Sangenjaya to an apartment in Odaiba (the same one as Inoue and Hida families). The form of Takeru three years later, since his adventures as a Chosen Child in 1999. His elementary school is the same as Daisuke and the others, Odaiba elementary school, Class 5-A. His Digivice changes into the green D-3 from the power of his Digimental of Hope. Perhaps due to his experiences in the adventure at a young age, he is very calm and composed than others his own age; but when he came near to losing Patamon, he showed excessive fear. Normally he is a quiet and kind-hearted boy, but his hatred for the “darkness” that had once taken Angemon’s life is stronger than anyone else’s.
Without a trace of the easily-sick impression that she had three years ago, she has grown up into a vigorous and healthy young girl. Her D-3 is pink. Her Digimental is the same as her Crest, “Light”. As ruler of the “light” that points towards “evolution” in the Digital World, she is a special existence among the children. In elementary school, she is in the same Class 5-A as Daisuke and Takeru. She smoothly avoids the feelings of affection that Daisuke directs at her, showing an aspect of her befitting a girl of her age. However, her emotional dependence on her brother Taichi is still as strong as ever.

– Digimon Kaiser
=The Digital World’s new ruler=
A tyrant who suddenly appears in the Digital World. Confident and prideful, his way of thinking is evil and cruel. He looks down at everyone around him, viewing both humans and Digimon as “insects!” For the Kaiser, who thinks Digimon are only data, taking over the Digital World is only a game. At the time, he did not show himself at night, but after episode 9 when his identity is revealed, he leaves the real world to reside in the Digital World. Through repeated experiments on multiple Digimon, he develops the Evil Spiral that allows him to evolve Digimon to Perfect Level without the use of a Crest and control them. Before long, his twisted talents create the fused monster Chimeramon using the fearsome Devimon’s data as its base.

– Ichijouji Ken
=The genius boy who awakens to “kindness”=
A genius boy who is featured even on TV. Everyone likes him and he is known throughout the world as good-natured, moral person who cannot be faulted for anything. Although a 5th grader and 11 years old, he shows his genius in many forms of mental and physical fields such as computer programming, speaking Spanish, soccer, archery, and chess.
However, he was in truth the Digimon Kaiser, cruel tyrant of the Digital World. His D-3 color is black. While there is a time he is troubled over the weight of his sins and acts apart from the children, his friendship with Daisuke grows. As the Chosen Child of “Kindness,” he fights for the Digital World and the Digimon.
Ken’s parents. They put all of their attention on Ken’s genius older brother Osamu, neglecting to show as much care to the young Ken. When Ken lost his heart as the Digimon Kaiser and fell into a deep sleep, his parents realize for the first time that their way of raising their children had distorted their sons’ hearts. His father works at a computer company. His mother’s specialty dish is hamburgers. The family lives in room 303 in the “Tamachi T.M. Mansion” condo in Tamachi.
— Ichijouji brothers
Ken once had an older brother Osamu, who was three years older than him. While Osamu was Ken’s role model, Osamu was also so superior in everything that he was also an object of envy. His genius older brother monopolized their parents love and the admiration of everyone around them. Ken himself had nothing. While he came to think of himself in this way, a Digivice appeared before the two one day. Ken takes the Digivice in hand and catches a glimpse of the Digital World. Ken was a Chosen Child. But jealous of this, Osamu takes the Digivice from him. Ken wishes for his brother to disappear. Two years from now, as if granting that wish, Osamu is killed in a car accident. His brother died just as he wished. At his funeral, Oikawa learns of Ken and skillfully manipulates Ken’s heart, inviting him to the sea of darkness.

He gives the goggles he cherished along with “courage” to Daisuke. Now that he’s in middle school, he has his own room.
Starting with Daisuke’s older sister, Jun, he is supported by many fans. He is secretly happy about his younger brother Takeru living closer. On August 1st that comes once a year, he invited Takeru to the Ishida residence and treated him to a special dinner.

— Takenouchi Sora
8th grader in Odaiba middle school. 14 years old. After going into middle school, she joined the tennis club. Her experiences in the adventure have taught her to have a wider world view, and she has begun to challenge herself to become more feminine. Her relationship with her mother has gotten very good, and now she is learning flower-arranging and tennis from her. Some time immediately after that, she begins to have feelings for Yamato and the two of them start going out around Christmas. In Russia, she and Miyako make a lot of effort together in order to protect borscht.
—— Takenouchi Haruhiko
Sora’s father, a professor who teaches folkloristics at Tokyo University. His research takes him all over the world, and currently he is staying in Kyoto. Feeling that the spirits in Japanese folklore such as the kitsune and tanuki are similar to Digimon, not only is he grateful to the Digimon for aiding in his daughter’s growth, but he also appears to have an interest in the Digimon themselves. After meeting Miyako by coincidence while she is on a school trip, he told her about the four holy beasts that protected Kyoto from every direction. He also shows himself to be a somewhat comical person when he responds with an enthusiastic “Bingo!”
—— Takenouchi parents
Haruhiko is almost never at home due to his immersion in his research, while the mother is busy upholding the iemoto tradition. As a result, they are deeply grateful to the Digimon for keeping their family together.

— Izumi Koushiro
7th grader in Odaiba middle school. 13 years old. In both elementary and middle school, he is a member of the computer club. Since a computer is the basic necessity to open the Digital Gate, Daisuke and the others often rely on him. His inquisitive nature is the same as always, and his interest in the Digital World is deeper than anyone else’s. After Ken joins their group, he would often ask questions and listen to Ken’s stories. By doing such activities as developing a program that would detect the Digital Gate and taking the role of staff officer in strategical meetings, he acts as the brains of the group for the children.
7th grade. 13 years old. Because of her father’s work, the three-person family move to New York. She returns once to Japan to go to her (male) cousin’s wedding, but every time she makes an appearance, one can see that both her hair style and fashion sense make big changes. Her laid-back and free-spirited personality is the same as when she was younger, but her selfish actions have decreased. In New York, she is friends with Michael and other children who have Digimon partners.
With his partner Cyberdramon, he has been traveling the Digital World for 10 months. Due to his tanned skin, sparkling white teeth, and pleasant smile, Ruki sarcastically describes him to be releasing “the perfect sparkling aura,” and his actions show beyond the shadow of a doubt to be filled with nothing but friendship and good intentions. His abilities are quite high, and he is able to use the Device card that only the truly strong Tamer is said to be able to master. After he returns to the Real World with Takato and the others, he goes back to his home in Kyushu temporarily, until the appearance of the D-Reaper in Tokyo prompts him to come running back.
– Kanbara Takuya
=The hot blooded boy with flaming courage=
A fifth grader who lives in Jiyuugaoka. By receiving a message on a cell phone titled “A game that will decide your future,” he enters into a journey to the Digital World. After obtaining the spirit of Agnimon, one of the 10 Legendary Warriors, at the Flame Terminal, he becomes the first among the children to evolve into a Digimon. At home, he is always having to look after his younger brother, and he is the older brother type who always thinks about his friends before himself. His sense of justice is strong, and when he hears a voice calling for help, whether it is his friends or Digimon, he cannot ignore it. Because of that, he naturally ends up taking up the leadership position in the group.
— Warrior of Fire, Agnimon
The form that Takuya evolves into using the power of the Human Spirit of Flame. With such attacks as Salamander Break (enveloping his entire body in flames before spinning furiously and kicking out), Fire Darts (unleashing fire arrows), and Burning Salamander (punching out with fists as both arms spit out fire), he is able to use a diverse number of techniques that combine the power of fire with Oriental martial arts.
Human Spirit of Flame = Found at the Flame Terminal, where Takuya and the others first arrive in the Digital World. The spirit is protected by blue flames that reject everyone except the chosen one.
A boy who rode on the same train as Takuya, heading for Shibuya. 5th grader. He does not say much and has a cool personality, never bothering himself with strangers. He had been unable to open himself up to his stepmother for a long time, but recently began thinking about changing his attitude towards her on the anniversary of her and his father’s wedding day. It was during this time that he receives a message about “A game that will decide his future,” along with another message that is sent only to him claiming that by going to the Digital World, he will discover the secrets that have been imposed upon him. Perhaps because he has been raised as an only child, he shows himself at a loss on how to handle younger children such as Tomoki, but he learns to naturally care for others by following Takuya’s example. His ability to make calm and rational decisions is the best among the children, and even though he is sometimes at odds with Takuya, he protects his friends from danger. When he at last meets his older twin brother, Kouichi, after having been separated at birth, he learns the true meaning behind his journey.
After finding out from his grandmother at her sickbed that he had a brother, he grows interested in meeting Kouji, whom he had not seen before. However, when he does, he gradually starts harboring feelings of resentment, for Kouji appeared to live a life that lacked nothing while Kouichi and his mother were badly off. These dark feelings are what Cherubimon manipulates to use him. Once he regains his memories and emotions as Kouichi, the guilt he feels from his actions prevent him from opening up to Kouji, but when he faces the darkness that is within his own heart, he gains the true Spirits of darkness. As a newly born Warrior of Darkness, he chooses to fight alongside Kouji.
– Daimon Masaru
=The best fighter in Japan, who is beyond both calculation and common sense=
8th grader in a private school, Ohtori Academy. 14 years old. Just like his nickname “the best fighter in Japan” states, he spent each day from dawn until dusk fighting with his fists until one day he just happens to meet Agumon, who had escaped from DATS. After an all-out fist fight, the two of them make a pledge to be each other’s spiritual brother. This soon leads to him joining DATS. It was obvious at first that he preferred doing things his own way and he was vehemently against Tohma’s way, but before long they began to understand one another. In contrast to his wild personality, his consideration for family and friends is deeper than the average person, and he even takes good care of those who had only recently become his friend. Also, he does not hesitate to put his own self in danger in order to help them. His actions, which are unpredictable and lack common sense, often cause teamwork to fall apart, but there were also many times when his actions broke through a wall for them to keep moving forward. During the fight between the Digital World and the human world, he had developed greatly as a human being. After all of the battles were over, he heads to the Digital World to help rebuild it. His birthday is April 2nd. Blood type B.
=Elite fighter with emphasis on theory and data=
An elite team member who returned home to Japan after being dispatched from DATS EU headquarters. A genius who graduated head of his class at the age of 13 from Stockholm Royal Medical School, and with his brilliant mind developed the Digimon transmission device used by headquarters. Not only is he intelligent, but he is also excellent at sports, particularly in boxing where not even an Olympic champion could beat him. He is even able to K.O. Masaru easily. Although he has the blood of the noble Norstein family from Austria, his mother is Japanese and not of nobility, so he was not accepted as a rightful successor and grew up in Japan with his mother. After his mother’s death, the Norstein family takes him in, but he detests his father Franz for leaving them. Because he and Masaru are polar opposites in every way, they fought over every possible thing, but through many battles, they accepted each other and became good partners. After their battle is over, he wins the Nobel Prize for medicine five years later at age 19.
=The kind and strong red flower of DATS=
The only woman among DATS active-working members. At age 18, she is the oldest among the three and perhaps because of that, she appears to be the closest to common sense compared to the other two. She does her work seriously, but as she is often turned this way and that by Masaru and Tohma’s actions, she almost always finds herself confronting an unexpected situation. Whispering “This is the worst” has become her favorite phrase. Although she has a hard-working personality, Lalamon exposes a messy side to her personal life, saying that “she doesn’t clean her room,” “she doesn’t fold her laundry,” and “she has bad sleeping form.” When she was a child, she formed a complex by comparing herself to her talented older sisters, and she lost her self-confidence. It was her first meeting with Lalamon that she was able to begin recovering from her dejection. It was also Lalamon’s presence that was able to help her get back on her feet when she grew faint-hearted when facing a battle in the Digital World. Her favorite foods are Musashiya’s strawberry mille-feuille and Yokonari’s coffee jelly. After the battle was over, she becomes a policewoman and works as Satsuma’s subordinate.
A young boy who Masaru and the others first meet in the Digital World. He has immense hatred for humans and fights against Masaru and co. many times. Although he identifies himself as a Digimon, he is actually a human whose name is Noguchi Ikuto. Born as the only son of the Noguchi couple, who are researchers of super-spacetime, he was sucked into a Digital Gate that suddenly opened within the research room of their home when he was a baby, leaving his whereabouts unknown. Lost in the Digital World, he was found and raised by Yukidarumon, but when Yukidarumon is killed by humans, he grows to hate them viciously. Following in allegiance with Mercurimon, who also felt hostility to humans, Ikuto fights using the boomerang as his weapon. That Mercurimon gives him his Digivice made by Daimon Suguru. After learning of his origins and returning to the human world, he is still unable to accept his circumstances, but after meeting his real parents his heart gradually shifts and he becomes a reliable comrade who fights the real enemy alongside Masaru and co. Five years later, after the battle is over, he goes to the same middle school as Chika.
Special interview
– Seki Hiromi (Producer) x Kakudou Hiroyuki (Series director) x Yukio Kaizawa (Series director)
The beginning
— First, please tell us how the anime process got started.
Seki: It was originally a project that Bandai-san threw at Toei Animation. They wanted to turn the the “Digital Monster” mobile game for boys that had been shaped from the tamagotchi into an animation. In order to set that up, blah, blah, is how things first started. However, at that point we did have the “evolution” component but no other characters beyond the monsters that are found in the mobile game. They didn’t speak words and there was no story either.
— How did things flesh out from there?
— How did Kakudou-san end up getting involved?
— Was it decided for the TV series and movie to be set up at the same time?
— Were the basic contents decided at that point?
The Chosen Children
— How did 7 characters end up being the regulars?
— By the way, it’s also been said that you like writing up details about the families.
— The family situations surrounding the children makes one feel good to look at.
Enjoying location hunting
— It’s in the Tokyo arc that families are seen being involved.
— Having the setting take place in a specific area “Odaiba” is also unique.
— Was it to act as a contrast to the Digital World?
— The newly constructed office building of Fuji TV was destroyed.
— Was there anything during location hunting that left an impression on you?
— Did you frequently go location hunting?
The second series 3 years later
— The series began with the idea that it would run for a year, did it?
— When was the second season decided?
— Is that also why the Digimon Kaiser was introduced as a new element?
— A glimpse of that is seen in the CD dramas and novels.
— It certainly does feel connected from the movies.
— The relationship between the real world and the Digital World changes between the first and second series.
— The flow of time between broadcast was synchronized with the real seasons, so it was unique in that it felt like it was really taking place.
— Was the two series as a memoir of Takeru determined from the beginning?
From “partners” to “friends”
— The third series isn’t a continuation, but an entirely new series.
— “Tamers” became a series that conspicuously depict realism.
— Terriermon had a particular atmosphere about him.
— The series compositor, Konaka (Chiaki)-san wrote an episode in “02”.
— The idea of Digimon and children fusing together was innovative.
The visual of the Digital World
— The format of the Digital World itself was reformed.
— Did Kakudou-san make all of them without pay?
— Did you do the armor evolutions as well?
The fourth series is “to choose”.
— How was the course of action for the fourth series decided?
— The idea of not having Digimon partners was also innovative.
— The fact that one “must make their own decision” was emphasized in the very first episode.
— Was it decided in the beginning that they would not appear until the end?
— Kakudou-san has acted as episode director in series 3 and 4.
— Regardless that the anime series was an original story, “X-Evolution” is a “Digital Monster” movie in the truest sense.
What Digimon doesn’t lack is music.
— When we think of Digimon, the impression of “evolution music” is strong.
— It was a surprise that “brave heart” also played during “02”.
— If you include the single maxis, the total comes out to around 130.
— It got very busy around “02”.
— Holding a live concert at Zepp Tokyo.
— The CD dramas include some information that is quite worth listening to.
— There was even an episode involving 9/11.
Looking back after 10 years
— Now looking back after 10 years, what is “Digimon” to you?
— Last of all is a message to the fans from Seki-san.

Digimon index

02/27/10 – If you didn’t see your favorite character’s name in the table of contents, don’t worry. Everyone is in this book. I really recommend that everyone buys this book only because of the pictures in them. None are colored or new, but you get to see most of the original lineart for all characters/settings. If you ever wondered how that character looked front and back for fanart/cosplay purposes, this book is your encyclopedia. The descriptions that come with them are nothing new as far as I’ve read so far, though… they only describe the character as you had already seen them in the anime. Eh, since this blog isn’t to review the item though, I’ll stop there.
And no (since this seems to be a hot topic), sorry, there is no confirmation on Takeru/Hikari coupling for Zero Two — the official couples are Sora/Yamato and Miyako/Ken. That’s it! The “Column” pages for this book are only one page and give the minimum of information.
Because it is both a 380-ish page book and I have exams coming up this week, I’ll be updating this page pretty slowly <s>during the first week of March. I think I’ll start with the interview first.</s>

03/08/10 – Requests and the interview being worked on in my free intervals as of now. I will reply back to your comment when I am finished with your request.
