Chiaki J. Konaka uploaded some of his original screenplays for Digimon Tamers to his website. He notes that some parts of them play out differently from the final piece that was broadcast on air. I, personally, find this information interesting but I am mainly posting the first one for now to gauge interest. If there are any errors in the format, please excuse them for this is my first attempt at screenwriting. The Japanese screenplay layout is different from English, and I've chosen to write it as an English-format screenplay.

YAMAKI: Back when humans and Digimon worked together to defeat the D-Reaper, the digital world was still a very small place. But now, a majority of the world’s lifestyle communicates through network nodes^[1] and that colossal amount of information has expanded the digital world ad infinitum. In our current standing, mankind must begin to anticipate that, from a place even deeper within the deep net, neither of which mankind can touch, something unimaginable will be born and materialize itself into the real world.

TERRIERMON: Ehhh, really?
GUILMON: Yeah, I think so.
TERRIERMON: Well, I want to see Jian and Shaochung soon too, but—
GUILMON: I don’t wanna just sit around waiting for Takato to come to the digital world!
TERRIERMON: But walking around finding them is only gonna tire us out!
GUILMON: [stops] Huh? But you’re not walking, Terriermon. You’ve been sitting on my head this whole time.
TERRIERMON: [jumps down] I can walk, too! I just have to walk a little faster than you so I can keep up.
GUILMON: [sighs and continues to walk] Where do you think Renamon went?
TERRIERMON: It’s strange, isn’t it? We haven’t seen her_[a] for a long time. Besides, Guilmon, back then, if you hadn’t—
GUILMON: Ah!
TERRIERMON: Huh? What?
GUILMON: What… is that?
TERRIERMON: Wai— I can’t see it very well, so I’m climbing up your head again. [jumps up] Wow… That’s a really steep precipe.
GUILMON: Terriermon, didn’t you say that we were at the very bottom of the digital world?
TERRIERMON: From a place even deeper than this one…
GUILMON: Something… Something’s climbing out of there!
TERRIERMON: Guilmon!

TAKATO: Let’s see now… If I do this…
JURI: There you are! Takato-kun!
TAKATO: Ah, Ju– Katou-san!
JURI: Sorry I’m late.
TAKATO: Don’t worry, I wasn’t waiting that long.
JURI: What’s that you’re holding?
TAKATO: Oh, this? It’s called a PDA. My dad got himself a new one, so he gave his old one to me.
JURI: Can you play games on it?
TAKATO: No, there aren’t many games on it. It’s more like an electronic notebook.
JURI: Hmm… Hey, have you seen Lee-kun and Ruki lately?
TAKATO: Now that I think of it, not really…
JURI: It’s harder to meet up when we’re in different middle schools, huh?
TAKATO: Yeah.
[silence]
JURI: Do you think Guilmon and the others are doing well…?
TAKATO: It’s hard to believe that two years have gone by since then…
JURI: [gasps] S–Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring it up—
TAKATO: It’s fine. Time really does go by quickly. It’s just… I haven’t been able to do anything to help me get closer to seeing Guilmon again… [pause] I wonder what we’d be like as adults?
JURI: Y’know… I think I know what I would be.
TAKATO: Huh?
JURI: I want to be an elementary school teacher!
TAKATO: Wow, that’s amazing! Haha, you mean an elementary school teacher like Asanuma-sensei?
JURI: Haha, how did you know? Do you remember how unmotivated Asanuma-sensei was when she became our homeroom teacher?
TAKATO: Yeah, I remember. But then she changed.
JURI: Yeah. She faced us with more purpose.
TAKATO: How old is Asanuma-sensei now?
JURI: Hmm, I think she’s twenty-eight.
TAKATO: Twenty-eight, huh? I wonder what we’d be like at that age… and what the digital world and real world would be like…
JURI: Well… I’ll be heading home now.
TAKATO: S–Sure, see you tomorrow.
JURI: Bye bye!

TAKATO: I always end up coming here again… The place where I hid Guilmon when he first came. [raises his voice] Heeey! [pause] A digital field won’t be showing up here anymore, and yet… Huh? W–What’s that light? It… isn’t a digital field… I’m being sucked in!
[TAKATO bangs into the gate]
TAKATO: Ow! Wai– Wait, I can’t get through these bars! —Eh?! M–My body is changing into light!

TAKATO: Huh? Where am I? Am I in the digital world? But it feels different… Heeey!
[A spotlight turns on]
TAKATO: Eh?!
YAMAKI: [through speaker] Sorry to surprise you like that, Takato-kun.
TAKATO: Huh? W–Who are you? Where am I?
[A sealed door opens]
YAMAKI: [through speaker] Come out from that chamber.
TAKATO: [under his breath] Okay…
[TAKATO leaves the chamber]

TAKATO: Hey, I am in the digital world!
YAMAKI: Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
TAKATO: Huh? Yamaki-san…? It is you! Yamaki-san, long time no see— wait, what? Why has your hair gone white?
YAMAKI: Hey there, Matsuda Takato-kun. It really has been a long time.
TAKATO: It’s not just your hair… Your face… What on earth happened?
YAMAKI: Do you remember the time when you Tamers, we Hypnos, and Jian’s father with the Wild Bunch worked with the Digimon?
TAKATO: Of course! It was just two years ago.
YAMAKI: [sighs] Yes… Yes, it was… For you.
TAKATO: You mean it’s not?
YAMAKI: After that incident, I resigned from the government and worked for a couple of years as a civilian on long-term forecast of the World Wide Mesh^[2]. However, not too long ago, I was reinstated and the Cybersecurity Act^[3] was passed in 2015.
TAKATO: …Huh?
YAMAKI: This place you see here is Nyx^[4], an organization under the direct control of the Cabinet Secretariat. Heh, it seems that I tend to feel insecure unless I’m working in secret bases like this one.
TAKATO: H–Hold on a second! Um, what year is this?
YAMAKI: Oh, sorry! I heedlessly ending up talking all about myself first. I want you to meet some people who’ve been waiting a long time for you. Please come with me.

TAKATO: Ehhhh?!
JIAN: Long time no see, Takato.
RUKI: Ugh, why does Takato get to be young? Heh, have you been well, Takato?
TAKATO: Jian and Ruki…? Why are you adults?!
YAMAKI: I’m sorry to confuse you like this. You’re in the year 2018.
TAKATO: W–Wait… Then, I’m…?

TERRIERMON: Hey, Guilmon… We’ve come this far, I think it’s moumantai now…
GUILMON: [slows down, gasping] That place back there was pretty intense, huh?
TERRIERMON: Yeah… but…
GUILMON: Hm? What’s wrong, Terriermon?
TERRIERMON: Don’t quote me on this, but if we rode into that huge rapids or whirlpool-looking thing, maybe we can enter the real world.
GUILMON: Ehhh?! W–We can see Takatomon and the others again?!
TERRIERMON: I just thought it could happen…
GUILMON: Then let’s go back!

VOICE: Don’t go there.
TERRIERMON: Huh?
GUILMON: W–Who are you? Where is your voice coming from?
VOICE: You’ll find out one day. Listen to me, Guilmon, Terriermon. When you hear a voice calling your names, head towards that instead…
[The VOICE fades]
TERRIERMON: Who do you think that was?
GUILMON: Hmm… Mmmm… I had this feeling that it’s a voice I know_[b]…
TERRIERMON: Huh? Who?
GUILMON: Mmmm…… Hehe, I don’t know.
TERRIERMON: Droop.

TAKATO: Um, so that means… Jian and Ruki are twenty-eight years old right now? You guys look really grown-up, but at the same time, it’s like you haven’t changed…
JIAN: After I graduated from Stanford University, I stayed in America to research the Digimon. Of course, it was all so we could see Terriermon and the others again.
YAMAKI: I asked him as a big favor to return here.
TAKATO: I see… What about you, Ruki? What have you been doing?
RUKI: Me? Um… When I entered university, my mom forced me to work as a model. But I got easily bored with it, so I did freestyle motocross instead. I guess challenging others is what I like most.
TAKATO: Wow… W–Wait a second. Then what about me? Me in 2018—
JIAN: The Takato that we know said that he couldn’t stand just waiting around until Guilmon came back, so he went off to travel the world.
RUKI: Juri’s been waiting for Takato for a really long time.
TAKATO: Eh?
YAMAKI: Last year, you suddenly disappeared from the real world without a trace. Nyx is in absolute need of the Tamers’ help, and having Matsuda Takato around is particularly essential. However, you disappeared.
TAKATO: Ehhhhhhh?!

CHILD: Katou-sensei! Goodbye!
JURI: Goodbye! Be careful on your way home!
CHILD: Okay!
JURI: Guilmon’s home… I always end up coming back here again… I come here thinking that, maybe today, you’ll be back home… Takato, where are you? Wherever you are, you’re safe, right? I’ll be waiting for you.

YAMAKI: At around 2001, Hypnos, from within the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office building, was destroyed by the D-Reaper. However, the equipment there would have been quickly outdated anyway. During these last 17 years, the digital world has perfectly overlapped with the real world, with the digital world growing far more massive.
JIAN: The digital world that we once journeyed through has been completely transformed.
TAKATO: W–What about the Digimon?
JIAN: They’re there, of course! Because Yamaki-san made contact with me, I was able to devote my research efforts to Nyx here.
TAKATO: Is this device what brought me from where I came from?
YAMAKI: Yes. It’s still in the testing phase, but it’s finally begun operation this year. This is the realization system called the Re-Animator.
TAKATO: “Realization”?
RUKI: But I still don’t understand why Takato showed up as a middle school kid.
YAMAKI: Hmm… I suppose there’s no other way to interpret this than that this form had the highest bio-parameters in the digital world. The Re-Animator could only scan your information from the year 2003.
TAKATO: Huh? So, I’m not really me? But— Ouch! What was that for, Ruki?!
[RUKI laughs]
JIAN: [laughs] Ruki, you’re horrible.
TAKATO: Don’t tug other people’s cheeks out of nowhere!
RUKI: But it hurts, so that proves you have a physical body. You’ve Realized perfectly, so don’t worry.
TAKATO: Huh? —Oh, I see. I guess this is like the time when Guilmon first appeared in our world.
RUKI: Aww, this Takato is so small and cute! [pats TAKATO’s head]
TAKATO: S–Stop that!
[Alarm bells ring]
NYX: Warning. A digital zone has been detected in Shinjuku skies.
TAKATO: W–What’s going on?
YAMAKI: This is the reason why we need you and your Digimon’s help. Activate Terminal Defender!
NYX: Terminal Defender activated.
TAKATO: What’s happening?

JURI: Eh? Wha— The sky just suddenly—

–

NYX: Warning. Transfer displacement taking place in West Shinjuku skies above Nyx. Interference with digital world.
YAMAKI: Analyze.
NYX: I believe it to be a portal. Linkage to digital world confirmed. Materialization of matter detected.
TAKATO: W–What’s coming?
YAMAKI: I don’t know what form it will take, but we do know its true nature. That thing is a form of pure malice, a stand-alone created from inside the digital world’s deep zone… The Malice Bot_[c].
TAKATO: …!
JIAN: Ugh, that was faster than I expected. It’s already made contact with the real world.
RUKI: What exactly is the Malice Bot? Is it stronger than the D-Reaper?
YAMAKI: The D-Reaper wouldn’t even compare.
RUKI: Eh?!
YAMAKI: If you described the digital world during the time of the D-Reaper’s attack to be as big as the solar system, then this one is as big as the Milky Way. Soon, singularity^[7]… the technological singularity will fall upon us. It won’t be just AI affected. All technological environments created by man will attempt to surpass mankind’s imaginations. However, unlike the D-Reaper, I anticipated that native intelligence from the Deep Mesh would come to invade the real world.
TAKATO: Eh… Wai—
JIAN: I made the same prediction when I was researching in the NSA^[5].
RUKI: Then we’ll just have to fight it.
JIAN: The D-Reaper was big scale, but it was basically a simple program. But the Malice Bot has a mind that differs from a regular human’s.
YAMAKI: What’s more, its origin comes from mankind’s malicious intent. Calling it the clichéd “demon” wouldn’t even cover how bad it is.
TAKATO: And that’s why we had to come together again.
JIAN: Yes. And what we need… are our partners.
RUKI: But how will we get Renamon and the others to com— [gasps] This Re-Animator!
YAMAKI: Yes. In the past, the Digimon Realized into the real world with the help of the Digi-gnomes, who are fickle and thus unreliable. However, our current technology can make what was impossible in the past into a reality.
TAKATO: You can do it?
YAMAKI: A nanotechnology called foglets^[6] has advanced to make materialization possible. We’ll load their data into the foglets of that chamber that you came from. That’s how the Re-Animator works.
TAKATO: Then, you can bring Guilmon and the others here?
JIAN: It brought you here, Takato, so I think it’s possible.
YAMAKI: But the data itself isn’t enough. If we want to summon them from the digital world, we need you, their Tamers, to set off the transistor.
RUKI: In other words… We need a strong desire to call them here, right?
TAKATO: Okay. I’ll do it!
NYX: Portal has reached its global maximum. Materialization process has begun.
YAMAKI: Put these on your heads.
TAKATO: Huh?
RUKI: What is this? A VR headset?
JIAN: Don’t complain. Yamaki-san, send us the signal.
TAKATO: Oh, I’m starting to see something.
JIAN: This thing acts as a virtual machine for the D-Ark functions and the Blue card parameters. Search for your Digimon… Think strongly about the Digimon you want to find… Now, here we go!
NYX: Re-Animator booting up. Quantum supremacy^[8] at maximum.

TAKATO: Guilmon.
JIAN: Terriermon.
RUKI: Renamon… please!

GUILMON: Huh? A tunnel suddenly appeared in front of us.
TERRIERMON: Ughhh, weird stuff keeps happening!
TAKATO: Guilmon!
GUILMON: Takatomon!
JIAN: Terriermon!
TERRIERMON: That’s Jian!
RUKI: Renamon! Hurry up and get here!
TERRIERMON: Renamon isn’t here…
GUILMON: That voice before said that when our name is called, to run towards the one calling us, right?
TERRIERMON: It’s coming from the other side of this tunnel.
GUILMON: Let’s go!
TERRIERMON: Ah, wait! Wait for me!

YAMAKI: Release the foglets.
NYX: Releasing foglets. Re-Animator power activating.
JIAN: Terriermon…
TAKATO: So this is how I got here. Guilmon!
NYX: Re-Animator Realizing two bodies.
RUKI: Two?

JIAN: Yes!
TAKATO: They look like fog, I can’t see them! [takes off headset]
NYX: Gateway is opening.
TAKATO: Guilmon!
RUKI: Wait! I’m coming too!

TAKATO: Guilmon!
GUILMON: Takato!
TAKATO: Guilmon! Guilmon!
TERRIERMON: Jian!
JIAN: There’s Terriermon!
RUKI: And Renamon?!
GUILMON: Yay, it’s Takato!

RUKI: Eh? Renamon? Where’s Renamon?
TERRIERMON: Well… Renamon apparently disappeared from the digital world a while back.
RUKI: What?
JIAN: Then could she be in the real world?
TERRIERMON: I don’t know…
GUILMON: Huh? Takato isn’t different at all, but Jian and Ruki have gotten bigger!
JIAN: Y–Yeah, I’ll explain that later. Yamaki-san.
YAMAKI: Yes. Guilmon, Terriermon. I need your help again. The enemy has already appeared above us, in our skies!
NYX: Materialization of Malice Bot in progress. Materialization of Malice Bot in progress.

JURI: What’s happening? A square hole appeared in the sky…

TERRIERMON: Is a bad guy trying to come out from that square zone, Jian?
JIAN: Yes. Terriermon, will you face it with me?
TERRIERMON: O~kay! It’s been a while since I’ve gone wild!
TAKATO: Guilmon, I’m sorry to do this to you right when we’ve met again.
GUILMON: We can play lots later!
TAKATO: Haha, even you seem to have grown up a little, Guilmon.
JIAN: Takato! Ruki! Let’s go!
TAKATO: Yeah!
RUKI: Renamon, where are you? You’re not here and I can’t stand it!

JURI: Ah! The hexagonal building^[9] is rising up!
TAKATO: Wow, this acted as an elevator?
JURI: Ah… T–Takato?!
TAKATO: K–Katou-san!
JURI: Why… How… You’re the same as you were in the past…?
TAKATO: U–Uh, sorry! I don’t know much about this either! I’ll explain everything later, so could you wait right now?
JURI: Huh?

JIAN: Ugh!
YAMAKI: The Malice Bot is coming out of the portal!
JIAN: I think it’s gonna be gigantic…
RUKI: It doesn’t have a clear shape. How do we attack this?
[MALICE BOT roars]
TAKATO: Its voice is killing my ears!
RUKI: Just from its voice…
JIAN: The buildings are shaking! It’s ultra low frequency! At this rate, all of Shinjuku will be obliterated!
TERRIERMON: Well, taking quick action leads to victory. Petit Twister!
GUILMON: Okay… Fireball!
TAKATO: You got it, Guilmon!
JIAN: Wait, you’re just burning down what’s around you! There’s still more of the Malice Bot!
TAKATO: Damn it… Child levels won’t work, huh?
GUILMON: That’s not true, Takato!
JIAN: But…
RUKI: What are you guys doing? Your Tamers, aren’t you?!
JIAN: That’s… a Digimon card!
TAKATO: But we don’t have the D-Ark.
RUKI: Heh, scan it with a smartphone.
TAKATO: Smartphone?
[RUKI tosses TAKATO her smartphone]
RUKI: Use that.
TAKATO: Oh, so it’s like a PDA?
JIAN: Ruki, the card!

JIAN: Scanning! Card Slash! Terriermon! Take it!
TERRIERMON: Okay! Blazing Fire!

TAKATO: I got this. Ruki, give me the card! Scanning! Card Slash! Guilmon!
GUILMON: I got it, Takato! Crimson Sword_[d]!

TAKATO: You did it!
YAMAKI: That attack just now gave it damage! Its power is decreasing!
[MALICE BOT moans]
JIAN: What an incredible voice…
RUKI: Is it crying…? [gasps] No way! What is that?!
JIAN: It can’t be…
TERRIERMON: Renamon? Is that Renamon?
TAKATO: The Malice Bot is Renamon?
YAMAKI: W–Wait! This could be a trap!
GUILMON: What do we do, Takato?
TAKATO: What do we do…?
RUKI: RENAMON!

The paleness of the sky and the blur of the day’s light
are endless.
I am unable to tell apart the excuses and lies
in these repetitious days.
I simply exist here,
questioning the meaning of my life.

TAKATO: Where is the real Renamon? And where in the world is myself in 2018? It looks like we Tamers, rejoined with Hirokazu and Kenta, will have to go on another journey. Guilmon, the two of us will evolve too! Next episode– I don’t know if we’ll have one or not, but I’m sure there will be one! “Digimon Tamers 2018”! You, too, can be a Tamer!

[1] Node = While the word itself means “intersection,” in network lingo it means the computer pathway or server.
[2] World Wide Mesh = The future of the web takes the form of a “mesh.”
[3] Cybersecurity Act = This law actually exists in Japan.
[4] Nyx = The name of the organization “Hypnos” was the name of “the god of sleep” in Greek mythology. The name of Yamaki’s newly established organization “Nyx” is the name of “the god of night” that Hypnos gave birth to. Nyx is managed by an AI, and responds with a synthesized voice. It’s (probably not) a coincidence that it’s a voice that everyone loves.
[5] NSA = The National Security Bureau in America, which Jian is affiliated with. In 2013, Edward Snowden disclosed their mass surveillance of civilians. Of course, their primary objective is to protect its citizens.
[6] Foglets = A term coined by J. Storrs Hall, a molecular nanotechnology researcher, to indicate nanobot utility fog. However, currently, it is only at the stage where it is anticipated to contribute to MR (mixed reality), the extension of AR (augmented reality). Its use of Realization and Materialization in this CD Drama is fiction.
[7] Singularity = The word indicates technological singularity, but it was first used by a science fiction writer. Ray Kurzweil made the hopeful prediction that when AI surpasses human knowledge, mankind itself and its mode of life would grow rapidly. Naturally, there are scientists who take the opposite view and predict a dystopia.
[8] Quantum supremacy = While I was writing the third draft of this scenario (pretty much the final draft), a news report was published that a computer developed by Google gained rapid knowledge with this type of technology.
[9] Hexagonal building = One of the icons of Shinjuku Central Park, the Old Yodobashi Water Treatment Plant Rokkakudo. It appeared in Tamers episode 8.
*Digimon are genderless in the Tamers universe, but for the sake of easy reading, I’ve forced on pronouns.
**The mysterious voice is spoken through a filter, so it is meant to be unidentifiable. However its speech pattern is distinctly male-inclined.
***Spoken as “malice bot,” which I take to mean is a form of “malicious bot.”
****Konaka has revealed on his Twitter that “Crimson Sword” (Kurenai-maru) is a sword that Guilmon uses, an idea which was not implemented during the TV series.

【Basic settings】
Timeslot: Year 2004 (2 years after series’ ending) with Takato and Juri
↓
Takato arrives in the year 2018 (present time) and fights with Guilmon and others to prevent danger.

If I make the setting take place 2 years after, it’s an old series that’s more than 15 years old, so the feeling that it’s a story that has come too late is strong. Even if I followed in the footsteps of “tri,” whose story takes place in 2005 (3 years after the original series), I feel that it wouldn’t help.
If I’m going to make a story “now,” then I want to depict Tamers in a realistic sense.
Even so, it’s impossible to expect Tsumura Makoto-san to voice a 28-year-old male.
That’s why I will make it into a story about middle schooler Takato appearing in the present time.

Matsuda Takato (age 14)     CV: Tsumura Makoto
(age 28)      ?
He studies to become an I.T. researcher because he wants to see Guilmon again, but because he can’t sit still, he travels the world looking for a digital field. He is engaged to Juri. In 2018, his whereabouts outside the country are lost.

She becomes a teacher who teaches at Yodobashi elementary school. She has plans to marry Takato when he returns home.

【Setting】
The series depicted a real reflection of the internet that existed in 2001 at the time of broadcast（officially though, it’s not specified what year and set to the year 200x). If I was to create a story again “now” with the internet (digital world) motif, then I believe that I should be addressing the internet’s “current” and “future” conditions.

The “singularity” that is said to arrive in the year 2045 is said to be the turning point of artificial intelligence surpassing mankind, and researchers from every country are considering how to welcome this (this much is truth).
However, in truth, the singularity has already begun in the year 2018.
The network (digital world) has already begun to overlap with reality (real world), and all sorts of people are using it unconsciously.
However, in the Deep Net, the depths of the internet where normal people can’t enter, an abnormality has occurred. A bot program that initially had simple actions abruptly evolves into “pure evil malice,” and it begins to affect the real world.

Yamaki, who once led the MEXT’s network surveillance organization, researches the singularity in a civilian organization after the series’ ending, which is where he senses the Malice Bot’s presence. He negotiates with the government and establishes a facility that will oppose it. However, the effects of the Malice Bot have already begun to invade the real world. Yamaki decides that the only ones who can defy it are the Digimon, and summons the young folk who were once Tamers.
However, Takato is the only one whose location is unknown…

○ Year 2004
Takato and Juri are 2nd years at Yodobashi Jr. High. They’re an innocent couple that’s still at the stage of just walking home together after school. They haven’t seen much of Jian and Ruki lately, since Jian has gone to a private prep school and Ruki attends Kagurazaka’s All-Girls College’s middle school section. Takato still remembers his adventures with Guilmon and the others as if it were only yesterday, but feels the loneliness of having separated from Guilmon.
The topic turns to what they’ll be doing in the future, and Juri reveals that she is vaguely thinking about wanting to be a teacher. Takato… has a lot of things that he wants to be, but for now, what he really wants most of all is to see Guilmon again.
As they wonder what they would be like as adults, they both go to their own homes.

○ Central Park
Takato gets curious and approaches the Shinjuku Central Park that had Guilmon’s Home. He peers into the tunnel, but as he expects, does not see a digital field (an electromagnetic field that Realizes Digimon). Disappointed, he’s about to go home… when he faintly hears Guilmon’s voice.
“Takato, come here!”
“Eh?!”
Just then! All of a sudden, a time-space whirlpool with terrible suction abruptly erupts there.
“Uwaaaaaah!”
Takato is sucked into the whirlpool and taken somewhere far away…

○ Takato wakes up in darkness
Takato thinks that he’s come to the digital world again, but that isn’t the case. He is in the center of a gigantic chamber. The room surrounding it looks like a large-scale experiment facility of some kind. He hears a familiar voice.
“Takato-kun, you’ve come.”
“Eh?! Yamaki-san…?”
When he opens the giant, thick door, he sees standing there a man who’s past middle age. It is without a doubt Yamaki Mitsuo, but aged-looking with gray hair.
“Come with me. There are people who wish to see you.”

They’re in Nyx’s* control room, a dreadnought communications facility built deep underneath Central Park.
Takato is led by Yamaki into a brightly lit room, where an adult man and woman are waiting.
“Eh…”
“Long time no see, Takato.”
“Why does Takato get to be young? Are you well, Takato?”
Takato can’t believe it. They are adult Jian and Ruki.
“What’s going on?”
“It’s the year 2018. You must be confused, but the truth is, we still don’t understand what’s going on either.”

Yamaki’s explanation
After the fight with Digimon + human VS D-Reaper, the real world and digital world briefly normalized, and the digital world grew even bigger due to the rapid development of communications and phone equipment. Now, all sorts of children and even old people use the digital world unconsciously.
However, the digital world wasn’t simply expanding its surface side. The deepest depths in the network used by humans was also expanding. An autonomous “pure evil” program called the Malice Bot slipped into those depths to gain complete control over it, and has already begun to break down the barrier between the digital world and real world. Although right now the extent of it being traced are it being recorded in photos and videos uploaded to social media, Yamaki anticipated that it would soon advance into a force even more destructive than the D-Reaper and, by the request of the government, built an intervention organization. This was Nyx.
Humans alone cannot oppose the Malice Bot. Now is the time to borrow the power of the Digimon. Yamaki calls together the Tamers to re-group. Jian is working in the NSA (America’s security bureau), but he has also predicted the threat of the Malice Bot and answers to Yamaki’s call. Ruki had put distance between herself and the digital world, but thinks that her true nature is being a Tamer and answers his call. Hirokazu and Kenta will also join in shortly.
However… No one knew where Takato was.
“We don’t know where 2018 Takato is.”
Takato is astounded.

*Nyx: In Greek mythology, it is the name of the “Goddess of night” that gives birth to Hypnos (the god of sleep). Originally it had a straight-laced name of “Office affiliated with Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications” but when Yamaki was invited on board, he renamed it to fit his eight-grade syndrome sense. It is, in reality, a post-Hypnos.

○ Nyx Control Room
In 2017, Takato hated just waiting for the Digimon to appear again, and goes off saying that he wants to travel the world. He promises Juri that when he comes back, they will marry. However, Takato’s whereabouts suddenly disappear.
Nyx’s quantum transporter “Re-Animator” is still in its testing stage, but Yamaki continues to spearhead its construction as a system to Realize Digimon. They give it a test run in response to Juri’s wish to call up Takato, but for some reason, 14-year-old Takato from the year 2004 appears instead.
“Does this mean, then, that I’ve time-traveled?”
“No… I don’t think it’s just simply time-traveling.”
This 2018 isn’t simply the world as it is 16 years after Takato’s 2004. It appears to be one of many parallel worlds. Apparently the “Mandela Effect” of a different parallel world’s mutual interference was occurring. This was also due to the effect of the Malice Bot.

○ 2018 Shinjuku
Juri, now a teacher, prays for Takato’s safety wherever he is.
Just then, a strange whirlpool begins to develop in Shinjuku’s skies. The high-rise buildings begin to warp.

○ Nyx
The Malice Bot begins to invade quicker than expected. The radio signals in Shinjuku area have already been cut off, and the digital world begins to overlap with the real world.
Nyx is protected by a strict Faraday cage, but its security will be broken with time. The only ones who can defy the Malice Bot are Digimon who are friends with humans.
Yamaki, Jian, and Ruki boot up the still incomplete Re-Animator. Takato watches, holding his breath in fear.
Within that tremendous anxiety—
“Fufufufufu~~n, heeeey!”
“T–Terriermon…”
“Ah, Guilmon is here too!!”
Takato rejoices at reuniting with Guilmon, who bursts through the door.
“Where’s Renamon…?”
“We don’t know where Renamon is right now~”
Ruki’s face turns pensive.

Rumble rumble rumble!

Nyx’s defense is being broken down. The Malice Bot’s target is them, unsurprisingly.
“What are you guys doing, Takato! Guilmon! Hit back!”
At Ruki’s voice, Takato comes to his senses.
“Let’s go!”
Guilmon and Terriermon jump out of Nyx and face the Malice Bot which has now become an enormous monster.
However, they are no match as Child levels.
Ruki: “Use this card!”
Ruki throws a card at Takato and Jian.
Card Slash! Matrix Evolution!
They evolve to Perfect levels Growlmon and Galgomon! Then they charge!!!!

This project began from a casual conversation.
It first took place at Bandai’s booth in “Jump Fiesta 2007,” which was held at the end of the year 2006 in Makuhari Messe. Bandai’s representative and I talked about how, because 2007 would make it 10 years since Digimon was first sold as a handheld game, we would at least like to set up some event for Summer 2007.
We figured that if we were going to do this, we should celebrate with something different from what we’ve already done before. I thought of a lot of things, but fell ill midway and had to semi-retire at the hospital for 50 days. After that, the representative for Bandai was changed, so the project was put to a temporary standstill.
But the “Digimon Chou Shinka Best!” CD that was re-released at the end of year 2006 became a big hit that sold over 20,000, and feeling that there must be something we could do to return the favor, the project idea was brought back into action.
At first, we considered forming a collaboration with an event, but it began to move in the direction of a CD collaboration that included the 5 main characters and the major artists from all 5 series. We’d never put all successive main characters onto one CD jacket before, and it was by sheer coincidence that our sale date was decided for August 1st, so we thought it may turn out to be the best present for the fans that we’ve yet created.
Everyone on the artist team was already skilled in making their own song and composition styles, so we received works that reflected their feelings for Digimon. Also, since the project was finally becoming a reality, I had a personal desire to hear those certain people sing new songs. With the tireless help of a large number of people, the project was able to take shape as you see here. Now I’d like to take this moment to give my deepest gratitude to everyone involved.
It will soon be 10 years since the anime first started as well.
It will make me happy if we can still do something precious for that time, in order to bring to mind once again the scenery we’d seen back then.
August 1st, 2007… I wonder if many people are gathering in Odaiba again for this year?
I hold anticipation that something will be born again from this memorial album…
And I pray that these “feelings” will reach the fans of Digimon all over the world…

The growth of their characters and their Digimon’s evolution?!

What sort of atmosphere was the recording studio like back in the day?

Fumiko Orikasa-san (abbreviated FO below) How many years has it been?
Mayumi Yamaguchi-san (abbreviated MY below) Five years, I think?
Makoto Tsumura-san (abbreviated MT below) It looks that way~
MY Oh dear… that’s amazing. Time really does fly.
MT Indeed. Guilmon sure was cute~ The part where he was very innocent at first and didn’t know anything was good. Even though he gradually got smarter. (laughs)
MY You make it sound like he stopped being cute (laughs). But I guess I remember more of the heartwarming feel in the beginning. When we moved into the second half of the series, it got all muddly…
MT Right, right. In the Digital World, we had to face oncoming waves of battles, so it turned into a difficult time… Now that I think about it, Jian kept stopping Terriermon^[1] from evolving at first, didn’t he?
MY Yup. I thought Terriermon was cute the way he was, so I wanted him to stay that way too. It wasn’t that I didn’t want him to evolve, just that I wanted him to stay cute…
FO So that’s why Jian kept preventing him from evolving too! (laughs)
MY Right, right. (laughs)
MT He was the Digimon who changed appearances in the most drastic way.

Was there any sort of reaction regarding that among the cast while recording?

▲Makoto Tsumura “Sazae-san” (as Wakame Isono), “Astro Boy: Tetsuwan Atom” (as Atom), etc. From Hokkaido.

MY Quite a lot, actually! There was this feeling of “ehhhh” coming from all of us, and there was even some booing involved. The person voicing him herself^[2] also let out a yell of surprise. (laughs) Apparently she’d been casted in the first place to act cute, but for it to end up that way had given her a shock.

By evolving, she has to change the way she acts after all.

MT All of those in the cast who voiced Digimon were like that. The forms that they’re introduced as evolve bigger and stronger, so they had to step up their acting each time.
MY Hiroki-kun^[3] was dripping with sweat in the end (laughs). He did really well.
FO Hiroki-kun looked like he had a lot more trouble with his beginning form. (laughs)
MY Impmon, right? You’re right, that role was probably the most troublesome. I personally thought it would be funny if Culumon got all muscular though (laughs).
MT Culumon became good friends with Juri, didn’t he?
MY But in the end, it got all jumbled up somewhat (laughs).
FO In any case, Juri-chan was a sad girl. Judging from her family situation too…

About the backgrounds of each character

The fact that each character comes with their own family background is one of the best parts of the Digimon series.

MT Takato grew up in a bakery^[4], so while Tokyo was having trouble, there was a scene where he made bread by himself. What did Ruki-chan’s family do again? They lived in a large estate.
FO Her mother was a model, but… the only adult who was there with Ruki for most of the time was her grandma.
MT What about her father?
FO He wasn’t with them. Some memories of him came up during the movie, but… All of the characters surrounding Ruki — her grandma, her mother, and Renamon — where all voiced by Imai-san^[5], which I thought was pretty amazing.
MY It felt like you two were enough to fill an entire family.
MT I was really impressed too!
MY Speaking of which, Renamon hardly seemed to change when she evolved. Unlike Terriermon… (laughs)
MT Oh, I remember Kyubimon very well… Since she was a nine-tailed fox^[6], it left a very big impression on me.

It’s tough work acting as Digimon?! What happened in audition…

While acting as your character, was there ever a time when you wanted to voice a Digimon?

MT Yes! Like Terriermon. I wanted to try a cute role. I kept wanting to try one the whole time, and the series ended without me getting a chance. (laughs)
MY I voiced a Digimon^[7] in the first series. My role as Jian was decided through audition, but back then, the thought that I’d be accepted for audition never crossed my mind, so I mentioned how cute Terriermon was while looking at the promotional pictures, like it was someone else’s business. (laughs)
FO I auditioned for a number of roles back then, with Ruki being one of them. I also tried out for Impmon at the same time. I’d voiced him with no idea of what the storyline even was, so I have memories of wondering who would be Impmon and it turned out to be Hiroki-kun! (laughs)
MT A woman could certainly get away with voicing Impmon.
MY But it would be pretty scary if that happened for real~ (laughs)
FO I never expected the storyline to end up that way, so when I think about that now, it is scary. (laughs)
MT In my case, my audition tape didn’t reach the casting office the first time, so I was decided for the role after a tryout later on.
MY If no one had realized that then, Tsumura-san’s Takato wouldn’t have existed. That’s also kind of amazing. (laughs)

Did you ever face something difficult while acting as Takato?

MT Takato was a normal boy, so he was very easy to act.
MY He was exactly like you~ (laughs). I thought it was wonderful how you were able to express a pure-hearted elementary school child so naturally.

How about Jian?

MY I voiced him without much conscious effort, but somehow I kept getting told that I made him sound sexy. Aoi-chan^[2] would be the one who’d tell me that, and I’d answer back that Terriermon shouldn’t say such things. (laughs)
MT We’d also call him Zenra [Note: Zenra = buck naked] instead of Jianliang. (laughs)
MY You’re right, even though everyone is naked when they evolve to Ultimate. That part was really embarrassing. (laughs)

How about Ruki?

FO I think I acted her role without as much difficulty as I expected. At any rate, I went with Ruki being cool, without having it seem like she had much friends. (laughs)
MY Ruki is a tsundere^[8], isn’t she?
FO Oh, maybe! She wasn’t described in that way back then, though.
MY She was tsundere of the season. Must’ve been nice.
FO Ruki was the first character for me that had common phrases. That’s why when it came time to saying things like “Card Slash,” I’d look at how the two of you did it first while thinking about how I should speak.

Have you ever wanted to see your character in a certain way?

MT I’d like to see him in a relationship, whether it’s with Juri-chan or not. I want to see him try making advances. Without changing my voice. (laughs)
MY He won’t get past saying “Um” or “Ah,” I expect. I’d like to see what Jian does in his daily life. Like whether or not he just sits in front of his computer all day or maybe have an episode of “Jianliang goes to Akihabara” (laughs). Maybe he tries to go into maid cafes while making sure no one sees him or he doesn’t go into any stores and just buys bulk items along the streets.
FO In that case, Ruki would probably be made to join an Akihabara tour. Then when she’s walking along, she’ll get pointed at to voices of “There’s the Digimon Queen!” (laughs).

MT Probably the impression that you had five years ago will be different from what you get now. For the amount of time that’s passed, the impact you receive from it will change, so it’d be nice if you enjoyed that.
MY If you buy it now with your New Year’s money, you can watch it at any time so I’d like it if even your children and grandchildren enjoyed it too. I think this story is a very good asset, so I’d like others to watch it by all means.
FO Those who keep the DVDs at hand must be super-fans, so I’d like for you to look back on the scenery and what else has changed from five years’ time, as well as enjoy this story of everyone’s friendships and youth once more.

N1) Jian kept stopping Terriermon — Jian was against the idea of Digimon fighting each other and so kept Terriermon from evolving. That was because letting him evolve would mean that he had to fight. Jian’s way of thinking was the exact opposite of Ruki, who thought that fighting was a Digimon’s reason for existing, but it grew evident that the Digimon themselves also wanted to evolve. By interacting not just with Takato and Ruki, but with Guilmon and Renamon, Jian reevaluates his thinking on both his partner’s evolution and fighting.
N2) The person voicing him herself — Aoi Tada-san who voices Terriermon. The same “Aoi-chan” who Yamaguchi-san refers to later on. As a Digimon partner, she also voices the evolved forms like Gargomon. Terriermon first appears in “Digimon Adventure 02″‘s movie “Digimon Hurricane Jouriku!!/Chouzetsu Shinka!! Ougon no Digimental” and is voiced by Tada-san. What’s more, she also voices Jian’s younger sister Shaochung’s partner, Lopmon.
N3) Hiroki-kun — Hiroki Takahashi-san who voices Beelzebumon/Impmon. A popular voice actor who is famous for performing a wide range of roles, from cool to comedic, as can be seen in “Konjiki no Gash Bell!!” (as Parco Folgore), “Tennis no Oujisama” (as Eiji Kikumaru), and “School Rumble” (as Kenji Harima). He apparently voiced Impmon and Beelzebumon with such enthusiasm that Yamaguchi-san says he came out sweating “as if he’s been under a waterfall”.
N4) Bakery — Takato’s home above the “Matsuda Bakery.” A small bakery located a bit outside of West Shinjuku, Takato often helps out his parents at the store. It is shown in episode 43 (“Hearts Connect! The Revival of Beelzebumon”!) that Takato knows how to make bread, when Takato and the others go to the store while the city has been evacuated due to the D-Reaper and make bread for breakfast. In the latter half of the series, Takato’s father also makes bread in the shape of Guilmon’s head.
N5) Imai-san — Yuka Imai-san who voices Renamon. She not only voices Kyubimon, but also Ruki’s mother and grandmother. Chiaki Konaka-san talks about this casting in his homepage, saying that it was a suggestion from producer Seki Hiromi-san. The song when Sakuyamon evolves is not only sung by Imai-san, but she also came up with the lyrics. Other than “Digimon Tamers,” she has performed in such roles as Yuki-sensei in “Ojamajo Doremi”.
N6) Nine-tailed fox — Renamon’s evolved form, Kyubimon, who is modeled after the nine-tailed fox spirit. It is a fictional existence that came from ancient Chinese legend, but in Japan it is famous for transforming into a beautiful woman from “Tamamo-no-mae” which is a story written in the “Otogizoushi” during the Heian period.
N7) Voiced a Digimon — About Gabumon, who appeared as Yamato Ishida’s Digimon partner in “Digimon Adventure” and “Digimon Adventure 02”. Due to his shyness, he wears Garurumon’s pelt over his normal form. His true form underneath the pelt is said to be a “reptile Digimon,” but does not make an appearance in the anime. Yamaguchi-san often passes by the Oogado Crossing in Shinjuku even now, and says that she often remembers “Digimon Tamers” at that time.
N8) Tsundere — One of the character types often used to describe female characters in video games and anime. Although they have romantic interest in the main character, they cannot express that feeling well and so take on a “tsun” [prickly] attitude in front of other people. But when the two of them are alone, they change into a “dere” [sweet] attitude, which describes the tsundere. There are various theories as to where the word first sprung from, but it became popular usage around 2002. Afterwards in 2006, it was nominated for the “New/Popular Word Award”.

A cheerful and positive 5th grade boy in Odaiba elementary school. He appears to move with reckless abandon, but he actually does take in his surroundings and he takes good care of his juniors in the soccer club. Taichi’s partner. With three sharp claws on each hand, his attitude of rushing to attack extremely strong enemies without fear comes from his partner. His appetite as well can be pretty ferocious. There are many times when he and Taichi both share their opinions to each other frankly, but due to his cheerful and honest personality, there are very little times when they end up fighting. His sense of justice is strong, and he is a reliable partner who evolves right away to protect Taichi when the situation looks grim. After his dark evolution to SkullGreymon, he feels at unease about evolution just like Taichi does, preventing him from even evolving into Greymon. However, after his training under Piccolomon, he learns the guts to challenge himself over and over again without fear of failure.
Baby Flame = Agumon’s special technique. He breathes out a ball of fire from his mouth. If he holds back from full power, he can even use it to light a campfire.

With his cool personality, he does not make attempts to hang out with anyone other than Takeru, but he is more considerate than anyone by keeping an eye on everyone’s conditions of fatigue and nerves. There are many times when he is the one who prevents Taichi from trying to tackle everything from the front. He can be pretty overprotective of Takeru, and considers it his job to protect Takeru because “he can’t do anything by himself.” During their fight with the Dark Masters, seeing Takeru’s growth causes him to lose footing on his identity, but through his clash with Taichi and his connection with Gabumon, he takes another look at himself and learns the meaning of true friendship: that there are times when you compensate for the weakness of others and vice-versa.

Yamato and Takeru’s father. Director of Fuji TV’s news report division, he is the type to put his own self in danger in order to gather information. Hiroaki’s subordinates – Sakurada (owns a radio cassette player. When he is feeling stressed out, he uses it to listen to the Heart Sutra), Chioka, and Yuki (the female reporter). After being attacked by a school of Gizamon, they are taken hostage to Big Sight where they show the same active abilities as their boss by helping out big time with Taichi’s father plans of escape.

While a strong-willed girl who is powerful enough to play 2-top with Taichi as the team’s striker, she is also a sensible, level-headed person who is thoughtful about the smallest details. She takes good care of the younger children in the group, like Mimi, Takeru, and Hikari, and she is loved by them as a kind older sister. On the other hand, she also has a delicate side to her and often keeps her troubles to herself. Her mother once stopped her from participating in a soccer match, and Sora misunderstood her actions by thinking that her mother only cared about her being the successor of the family’s iemoto tradition. However, while she was trying to stop an injured Piyomon from joining a fight, she realized how her mother must have felt when she had stopped Sora.

He is good at computers, even bringing his laptop to camp, which in the end became useful in revealing the truth of the Digimon world. He learned by accident that he is an adopted child and was troubled over his relationship with his parents, who were thinking of keeping this quiet from him until he became an adult. When Vamdemon isolated Odaiba, his parents told him the truth themselves for the first time, and he once more felt bonded to them as his real parents, as they had raised him as their own son.

For some reason, she is particularly well-liked by dirty types of Digimon, like Numemon and Sukamon. She is kind at heart, and after the Dark Masters appear she could no longer stand that a large number of Digimon were giving up their own lives to protect them and so decides to leave the group temporarily. However, upon accepting the death of Leomon, who had died protecting her from MetalEtemon, she decides to fight the Dark Masters so that he can once again be born in the Village of Beginnings. Starting with Ogremon, she leads a crowd of Digimon towards the top of Spiral Mountain.

Mimi’s father. He has a quiet personality but when the situation calls for it, he does what needs to be done. He once crashed an electric cart into DarkTyranomon. Mimi’s Digimon. A plant-type Digimon, she can unleash many different kinds of smells from the flower on top of her head. She can also suck up nourishment from the ground and perform photosynthesis. Although a bit timid at certain times, she is mainly a kind, gentle Digimon who loves cute and fashionable things just like Mimi. Her feelings are easily in sympathy with Mimi’s, so whenever Mimi cries, she also cries, and whenever Mimi laughs, she also laughs. When Mimi was saddened by the sacrifices the Digimon made for them and left the group, she was prevented from fighting, but upon seeing Leomon fight hard to protect them, she begs Mimi to let her fight, too.

With two leaves coming out of her head, she can now perform photosynthesis. It is in this form that she meets Mimi on File Island for the first time.

The evolved form of Palmon after being inspired by the Numemon’s desperate struggle against Monzaemon. Her personality as the fashion-loving Palmon hasn’t changed in the slightest, but now she displays a powerful boxing style. Her attack is unleashing the thorns on her body at the enemy, “Chiku Chiku Bang Bang.”

=Perfect / Data / Fairy type=
The Perfect Level that is born out of the flower on top of Togemon’s head. When Vamdemon’s army attacks and drags Mimi’s family and the people of Odaiba into it, Mimi’s tears of being unable to forgive that lead the way towards her super-evolution. She has a form similar to that of a human girl, and the four wings on her back allow her to fly the skies freely. The “Flower Necklace” she can make appear from air can make bad viruses in a rampaging Digimon disappear.

=Goes his own path in all seriousness=
6th grader in Odaiba elementary school. Since he planned on taking the entrance exam for a private middle school, he originally didn’t want to go to camp. A serious boy with a strong sense of responsibility, he worked hard as the oldest in the group to bring everyone back to their world safely, but because of his faintheartedness and lack of self-confidence he isn’t all that reliable. Because he is too honest, he often makes unnecessary remarks that discourage everyone. He aims to be a doctor because his dad tells him to, but his brother worries that it may not be the right career choice for Jyou since he faints at the sight of blood. But while caring for the injured Ogremon on Spiral Mountain, he awakens to the simple feeling that he wishes to help those in need before him.

He can be somewhat of a crybaby, but he has shown times when he volunteered himself to stay up as guard for the night or acted as a diligent worker who wouldn’t allow others to favor him with kindness. Due to memories of his parents’ divorce, he hates seeing two people he loves fight each other. Although small, his sense of justice is very strong and there are some cases when this quality appears almost to the point of stubbornness. When Hikari, who is the same age as him, joins their group, he grows even tougher and gains a strong heart that refuses to give up under any circumstances.

When Taichi is blown back towards Tokyo along with Koromon after their fight with Etemon, she acts as if she had once met Koromon, confusing the two. The truth turns out to be that 4 years ago when Digimon appeared in the real world, she and Taichi encounter Koromon for the first time, but Hikari is the only one who remembers it clearly. She becomes known as the eighth Chosen Children before long, partnering with Tailmon, and joining the rest of the children to their adventures back in the Digital World. Because she had recently gotten over an illness, she gives off the impression that she is very sickly throughout the series, but she is actually a cheerful and bright girl. That strength of hers is shown when she would not give in to fear even in front of Vamdemon.

Daisuke was the first to accept Ken, who was once their enemy, into their group. In the movie, he also shows kindness when he sheds tears for Wallace whom he had only met recently. At school, he is in the same A-class with Takeru and Hikari. Due to his attraction for Hikari, he views Takeru as a tough rival. A soccer boy, he has a senpai-kouhai relationship with Taichi in the soccer club. His dream is to become the world’s best ramen shop owner.

Koushiro’s junior, and current captain of Odaiba elementary school’s computer club. She is pretty good at computers and mechanics. It is also Miyako’s duty to make the call “Digital Gate Open! Chosen Children, let’s go!!” She is Iori and Takeru’s neighbor, living in the same condo as them. Because she moved to Odaiba in 5th grade, the Digimon fight in the Internet that occurred in spring 2000 is her first encounter with the Digimon.

The youngest among the year 2003 members, he is quite mature for his age. He acts courteously and politely in a way that’s hard to believe coming from a 9 year old. His father who was a policeman died 3 years ago, so his grandfather Chikara raised him in his father’s place. While always self-composed and hard on himself, he is clumsy at expressing himself as a child. He also does not like lies. Because of his diligence and strong sense of responsibility, he is not all that flexible and was unable to forgive Ken for being the Digimon Kaiser for some time. Before long, he learns about the relationship between his father and Oikawa, the man who threatens the Digital World.

Long ago, back when Hiroki believed in the Digital World’s existence, he forbid Hiroki from being friends with Oikawa and felt secretly accountable for that afterwards. In episode 47, when the series draws to its close, Chikara explains everything when Iori reveals Armadimon to him.

His Digivice changes into the green D-3 from the power of his Digimental of Hope. Perhaps due to his experiences in the adventure at a young age, he is very calm and composed than others his own age; but when he came near to losing Patamon, he showed excessive fear. Normally he is a quiet and kind-hearted boy, but his hatred for the “darkness” that had once taken Angemon’s life is stronger than anyone else’s.

Taichi’s sister, who had once joined the adventure as the 8th Chosen Child. 11 years old. Without a trace of the easily-sick impression that she had three years ago, she has grown up into a vigorous and healthy young girl. Her D-3 is pink. Her Digimental is the same as her Crest, “Light”. As ruler of the “light” that points towards “evolution” in the Digital World, she is a special existence among the children. In elementary school, she is in the same Class 5-A as Daisuke and Takeru. She smoothly avoids the feelings of affection that Daisuke directs at her, showing an aspect of her befitting a girl of her age. However, her emotional dependence on her brother Taichi is still as strong as ever.

=The Digital World’s new ruler=
A tyrant who suddenly appears in the Digital World. Confident and prideful, his way of thinking is evil and cruel. He looks down at everyone around him, viewing both humans and Digimon as “insects!” For the Kaiser, who thinks Digimon are only data, taking over the Digital World is only a game. At the time, he did not show himself at night, but after episode 9 when his identity is revealed, he leaves the real world to reside in the Digital World. Through repeated experiments on multiple Digimon, he develops the Evil Spiral that allows him to evolve Digimon to Perfect Level without the use of a Crest and control them. Before long, his twisted talents create the fused monster Chimeramon using the fearsome Devimon’s data as its base.

A genius boy who is featured even on TV. Everyone likes him and he is known throughout the world as good-natured, moral person who cannot be faulted for anything. Although a 5th grader and 11 years old, he shows his genius in many forms of mental and physical fields such as computer programming, speaking Spanish, soccer, archery, and chess.
However, he was in truth the Digimon Kaiser, cruel tyrant of the Digital World. His D-3 color is black. While there is a time he is troubled over the weight of his sins and acts apart from the children, his friendship with Daisuke grows. As the Chosen Child of “Kindness,” he fights for the Digital World and the Digimon.

Ken’s parents. They put all of their attention on Ken’s genius older brother Osamu, neglecting to show as much care to the young Ken. When Ken lost his heart as the Digimon Kaiser and fell into a deep sleep, his parents realize for the first time that their way of raising their children had distorted their sons’ hearts. His father works at a computer company. His mother’s specialty dish is hamburgers. The family lives in room 303 in the “Tamachi T.M. Mansion” condo in Tamachi.

Ken once had an older brother Osamu, who was three years older than him. While Osamu was Ken’s role model, Osamu was also so superior in everything that he was also an object of envy. His genius older brother monopolized their parents love and the admiration of everyone around them. Ken himself had nothing. While he came to think of himself in this way, a Digivice appeared before the two one day. Ken takes the Digivice in hand and catches a glimpse of the Digital World. Ken was a Chosen Child. But jealous of this, Osamu takes the Digivice from him. Ken wishes for his brother to disappear. Two years from now, as if granting that wish, Osamu is killed in a car accident. His brother died just as he wished. At his funeral, Oikawa learns of Ken and skillfully manipulates Ken’s heart, inviting him to the sea of darkness.

He is secretly happy about his younger brother Takeru living closer. On August 1st that comes once a year, he invited Takeru to the Ishida residence and treated him to a special dinner.

Her relationship with her mother has gotten very good, and now she is learning flower-arranging and tennis from her. Some time immediately after that, she begins to have feelings for Yamato and the two of them start going out around Christmas. In Russia, she and Miyako make a lot of effort together in order to protect borscht.

Sora’s father, a professor who teaches folkloristics at Tokyo University. His research takes him all over the world, and currently he is staying in Kyoto. Feeling that the spirits in Japanese folklore such as the kitsune and tanuki are similar to Digimon, not only is he grateful to the Digimon for aiding in his daughter’s growth, but he also appears to have an interest in the Digimon themselves. After meeting Miyako by coincidence while she is on a school trip, he told her about the four holy beasts that protected Kyoto from every direction. He also shows himself to be a somewhat comical person when he responds with an enthusiastic “Bingo!”

Haruhiko is almost never at home due to his immersion in his research, while the mother is busy upholding the iemoto tradition. As a result, they are deeply grateful to the Digimon for keeping their family together.

7th grader in Odaiba middle school. 13 years old. In both elementary and middle school, he is a member of the computer club. Since a computer is the basic necessity to open the Digital Gate, Daisuke and the others often rely on him. His inquisitive nature is the same as always, and his interest in the Digital World is deeper than anyone else’s. After Ken joins their group, he would often ask questions and listen to Ken’s stories. By doing such activities as developing a program that would detect the Digital Gate and taking the role of staff officer in strategical meetings, he acts as the brains of the group for the children.

7th grade. 13 years old. Because of her father’s work, the three-person family move to New York. Her laid-back and free-spirited personality is the same as when she was younger, but her selfish actions have decreased. In New York, she is friends with Michael and other children who have Digimon partners.

Due to his tanned skin, sparkling white teeth, and pleasant smile, Ruki sarcastically describes him to be releasing “the perfect sparkling aura,” and his actions show beyond the shadow of a doubt to be filled with nothing but friendship and good intentions. His abilities are quite high, and he is able to use the Device card that only the truly strong Tamer is said to be able to master. After he returns to the Real World with Takato and the others, he goes back to his home in Kyushu temporarily, until the appearance of the D-Reaper in Tokyo prompts him to come running back.

A fifth grader who lives in Jiyuugaoka. By receiving a message on a cell phone titled “A game that will decide your future,” he enters into a journey to the Digital World. At home, he is always having to look after his younger brother, and he is the older brother type who always thinks about his friends before himself. His sense of justice is strong, and when he hears a voice calling for help, whether it is his friends or Digimon, he cannot ignore it. Because of that, he naturally ends up taking up the leadership position in the group.

It was during this time that he receives a message about “A game that will decide his future,” along with another message that is sent only to him claiming that by going to the Digital World, he will discover the secrets that have been imposed upon him. Perhaps because he has been raised as an only child, he shows himself at a loss on how to handle younger children such as Tomoki, but he learns to naturally care for others by following Takuya’s example. His ability to make calm and rational decisions is the best among the children, and even though he is sometimes at odds with Takuya, he protects his friends from danger. When he at last meets his older twin brother, Kouichi, after having been separated at birth, he learns the true meaning behind his journey.

However, when he does, he gradually starts harboring feelings of resentment, for Kouji appeared to live a life that lacked nothing while Kouichi and his mother were badly off. These dark feelings are what Cherubimon manipulates to use him. Once he regains his memories and emotions as Kouichi, the guilt he feels from his actions prevent him from opening up to Kouji, but when he faces the darkness that is within his own heart, he gains the true Spirits of darkness. As a newly born Warrior of Darkness, he chooses to fight alongside Kouji.

8th grader in a private school, Ohtori Academy. 14 years old. Just like his nickname “the best fighter in Japan” states, he spent each day from dawn until dusk fighting with his fists until one day he just happens to meet Agumon, who had escaped from DATS. After an all-out fist fight, the two of them make a pledge to be each other’s spiritual brother. This soon leads to him joining DATS. It was obvious at first that he preferred doing things his own way and he was vehemently against Tohma’s way, but before long they began to understand one another. In contrast to his wild personality, his consideration for family and friends is deeper than the average person, and he even takes good care of those who had only recently become his friend. Also, he does not hesitate to put his own self in danger in order to help them. His actions, which are unpredictable and lack common sense, often cause teamwork to fall apart, but there were also many times when his actions broke through a wall for them to keep moving forward. During the fight between the Digital World and the human world, he had developed greatly as a human being. After all of the battles were over, he heads to the Digital World to help rebuild it. His birthday is April 2nd. Blood type B.

A genius who graduated head of his class at the age of 13 from Stockholm Royal Medical School, and with his brilliant mind developed the Digimon transmission device used by headquarters. Not only is he intelligent, but he is also excellent at sports, particularly in boxing where not even an Olympic champion could beat him. He is even able to K.O. Masaru easily. Although he has the blood of the noble Norstein family from Austria, his mother is Japanese and not of nobility, so he was not accepted as a rightful successor and grew up in Japan with his mother. After his mother’s death, the Norstein family takes him in, but he detests his father Franz for leaving them. Because he and Masaru are polar opposites in every way, they fought over every possible thing, but through many battles, they accepted each other and became good partners. After their battle is over, he wins the Nobel Prize for medicine five years later at age 19.

The only woman among DATS active-working members. At age 18, she is the oldest among the three and perhaps because of that, she appears to be the closest to common sense compared to the other two. She does her work seriously, but as she is often turned this way and that by Masaru and Tohma’s actions, she almost always finds herself confronting an unexpected situation. Whispering “This is the worst” has become her favorite phrase. Although she has a hard-working personality, Lalamon exposes a messy side to her personal life, saying that “she doesn’t clean her room,” “she doesn’t fold her laundry,” and “she has bad sleeping form.” When she was a child, she formed a complex by comparing herself to her talented older sisters, and she lost her self-confidence. It was her first meeting with Lalamon that she was able to begin recovering from her dejection. It was also Lalamon’s presence that was able to help her get back on her feet when she grew faint-hearted when facing a battle in the Digital World. Her favorite foods are Musashiya’s strawberry mille-feuille and Yokonari’s coffee jelly. After the battle was over, she becomes a policewoman and works as Satsuma’s subordinate.

Born as the only son of the Noguchi couple, who are researchers of super-spacetime, he was sucked into a Digital Gate that suddenly opened within the research room of their home when he was a baby, leaving his whereabouts unknown. Lost in the Digital World, he was found and raised by Yukidarumon, but when Yukidarumon is killed by humans, he grows to hate them viciously. Following in allegiance with Mercurimon, who also felt hostility to humans, Ikuto fights using the boomerang as his weapon. That Mercurimon gives him his Digivice made by Daimon Suguru. After learning of his origins and returning to the human world, he is still unable to accept his circumstances, but after meeting his real parents his heart gradually shifts and he becomes a reliable comrade who fights the real enemy alongside Masaru and co. Five years later, after the battle is over, he goes to the same middle school as Chika.

The beginning
— First, please tell us how the anime process got started.
Seki: It was originally a project that Bandai-san threw at Toei Animation. They wanted to turn the the “Digital Monster” mobile game for boys that had been shaped from the tamagotchi into an animation. In order to set that up, blah, blah, is how things first started. However, at that point we did have the “evolution” component but no other characters beyond the monsters that are found in the mobile game. They didn’t speak words and there was no story either.
— How did things flesh out from there?
— How did Kakudou-san end up getting involved?
— Was it decided for the TV series and movie to be set up at the same time?
— Were the basic contents decided at that point?

— By the way, it’s also been said that you like writing up details about the families.
— The family situations surrounding the children makes one feel good to look at.

02/27/10 – If you didn’t see your favorite character’s name in the table of contents, don’t worry. Everyone is in this book. I really recommend that everyone buys this book only because of the pictures in them. None are colored or new, but you get to see most of the original lineart for all characters/settings. If you ever wondered how that character looked front and back for fanart/cosplay purposes, this book is your encyclopedia. The descriptions that come with them are nothing new as far as I’ve read so far, though… they only describe the character as you had already seen them in the anime. Eh, since this blog isn’t to review the item though, I’ll stop there.
And no (since this seems to be a hot topic), sorry, there is no confirmation on Takeru/Hikari coupling for Zero Two — the official couples are Sora/Yamato and Miyako/Ken. That’s it! The “Column” pages for this book are only one page and give the minimum of information.
Because it is both a 380-ish page book and I have exams coming up this week, I’ll be updating this page pretty slowly during the first week of March. I think I’ll start with the interview first.

The Tamers are always fighting with Digimon. Naturally, because it wears them out, they’ve decided to have an outdoor picnic to refresh themselves. Will they be able to spend their time in quiet rest and relaxation?

Everyone has gone into the mountains today to have a pleasant picnic.
“Ah! Look, there’s a stream!”
Terriermon went into the water with Jian.
“Jian, look! I caught a fish!” Terriermon said happily.
Jian looked as if he was quite enjoying himself, too. “Now we’ll have plenty to eat for lunch.”
“Ahahaha! Moumantai!”

Once they had everything ready, all of them settled down to an amiable lunch!!
Takato and the other boys ate quickly and finished in a flash, while Ruki and Renamon chewed theirs unhurriedly.
“Renamon, want to try this?”
“O–Okay… What is it?”
“It’s deep-fried chicken gizzards. Here.”
Crunch, crunch, swallow.
“…You’ve sure brought a lot, Ruki.”

Guilmon was very full.
But oh? It looks like something has caught his attention.
“Takato! What’s that thing flying up there? Guilmon wants to know!!”
“Um, it says here that it’s… a Stern-us cin-ah-ray-shus.” [Sturnus cineraceus, the white-cheeked starling]
“Ah! It’s getting away!!”
“Let’s go after it! ‘White Wings’!!”
“Culumon is coming too, culu!!”

It was a normal Sunday afternoon, filled with nothing. A happy moment for the Tamers.
